Today (7/3): Reign wrap it up; PSCL doubleheader

Good morning from beautiful downtown Yakima and Northtown Coffee’s working WiFi.  While I’m sitting in this nice coffee shop, I’m staring at what I can only assume is a very large jail, a great addition to any downtown scene. Anyway, we now return you to your regularly scheduled Olympia sports scene…

The Olympia Reign’s regular season comes to an end tonight when they host the Edmonton Energy at the Skookum Events Center at Little Creek Casino at 7:00 PM.  Both teams are bound for the IBL playoffs in Bellingham starting on Thursday. With a win the Energy would secure a first round bye (don’t quote me on that, though, as the seeding process is a bit of a mystery). Win or lose, the Reign are bound for a first round game on Thursday.  The Energy dropped the Reign to their worst loss of the season on June 1st in Edmonton, 126-69. The Reign rallied the next night and only lost 138-104. Tip-off tonight is at 7:00 PM. Tickets are just $7 or $5 with a Little Creek players club card.

Meanwhile, the Puget Sound Collegiate League features two games tonight at the RAC. The Hawks Prairie Cardinals take on the Olympia Athletics at 5:00 PM and the West Olympia Linx face the Nisqually Silvers in the nightcap at 7:30.

Today (6/27): Doubleheader wraps up PSCL first half

The first half of the Puget Sound Collegiate League wraps up today with a doubleheader between the Lacey Saints and Nisqually Silvers. It’s a match-up between first place and the cellar, the Saints are 5-1 in league play this season while the Silvers just picked up their first regular season win on Monday when they broke a 3-3 tie by scoring 12 runs in the eighth inning. First pitch today at the RAC is at 5:00 PM.

Following today’s games, the PSCL takes a break for the weekend and sends their all-star traveling team, the Thurston County Senators, to the Canada Weekend Baseball Blast hosted by the Kelowna Jays. The Senators kick off the tournament tomorrow at 5:00 PM against the Okanogan A’s. The PSCL returns to action on Monday, July 2nd.

Monday scoreboard: Silvers go crazy for first league win

The Nisqually Silvers, 0-5 in the regular season, held the Hawks Prairie Cardinals offense in check in game one of their doubleheader on Monday night at the RAC. Down 2-0 through five innings, the Silvers’ Kyle Ginter (Colorado State-Pueblo) singled and drove in Ryan Taylor (Olympic College) to cut the Cardinals lead to just one. But the Cards extended their lead by scoring two runs in the sixth and Eli Fulton (Clark College, Capital HS) got the final three outs to pick up the save and give the Silvers their sixth straight loss. Shimpie Sato (Skagit Valley College) pitched 5 2/3 innings and gave up one earned run on six hits to get the win and Chandler Tracy (Saint Martin’s) went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Cardinals.

In game two, the Silvers gave up a run in the first and two more runs in the third inning and hopes for breaking their losing streak looked bleak. But in the fifth inning, the Silvers showed some life when they scored a run on a Brad Fairweather (University of Hawaii-Hilo) ground out. In the seventh, on the verge of losing their seventh straight game, Tanner Romo (Everett CC) was hit by a pitch, Jordan Falcon (New Mexico Highlands U) doubled moving Romo to third, and Romo scored and Falcon moved to third on a passed ball and the Cardinal lead was cut to 3-2. Fairweather then drove in his second run on a ground out and tied the game at 3-3.

Then, the unexpected happened. The Silvers sent 18 batters to the plate in the eighth inning and scored 12 runs on seven hits, six walks, and three errors. In the eighth alone, both Brandon Evans (Colorado State-Pueblo) and Cory Bassi (Saint Martin’s) had two hits with two RBI and two runs scored. Both Evans and Bassi went 3-for-5 overall and Falcon went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. The Cardinals used five pitchers in the long eighth inning.

Ian Buckles (George Fox) gave up three earned runs over seven innings to pick up the win for the Silvers and, with the pressure off, Andrei Jankanish (Saint Martin’s) pitched a scoreless bottom of the eighth to secure the Silvers’ first win of the regular season.

Today (6/25): Silvers, Cardinals doubleheader

The Nisqually Silvers get two chances tonight to get off the schneid in the PSCL’s league play when they face off with the Hawks Prairie Cardinals at 5:00 PM at the RAC. The Silvers are 0-5 in league and 1-9 overall and are coming off a 7-5 loss in ten innings to the West Olympia Linx on Saturday. Jordan Falcon (New Mexico Highlands U) is 7-for-19 (.368) on the season to lead the Silvers.

Meanwhile, the Hawks Prairie Cardinals come into the game at 3-3 in league play after taking two of three games from the Tumwater Brewers last week. Daniel Flahie (Grays Harbor CC) comes into the game hitting .400 (8-for-20) with six RBI and Conor Cook is batting .375 (9-for 24).

The Cardinals won the first and only meeting between the two teams on the PSCL’s opening day, 12-3.

Today (6/23): Tecmo, derby definitely; Baseball, racing doubtful

20120623-092244.jpgIn personal 10 year-old me excitement level at an all time high news, The Brick on Trosper is hosting the inaugural Pacific Northwest Tecmo Chamionships and I will be representing Oly Sports hard. Tecmo Bowl and Tecmo Super Bowl were always my favorite video games growing up, even when the technology got better and better. So there is no way that I can pass up playing a Tecmo Super Bowl tournament. I was so obsessed with the original Tecmo Bowl that I actually kept a notebook that tracked the statistics for all of my games. When Tecmo Super Bowl was released and kept the stats for you, I didn’t have to keep that notebook anymore, but I was still obsessed.

The tournament gets underway with pool play at noon that determines the seeding for the double elimination tournament that will crown a champion. You can still register for the tournament at The Brick on Trosper and the buy-in is $20. For more information, visit PNWTecmo.com.

Following my triumphant victory at the Tecmo tournament, head on over to Skateland! (I have decided I will always refer to Skateland! as Skateland! with an exclamation point from here on out on this blog) for the Oly Rollers derby doubleheader.

The warmup bout pits the fresh meat Bella Donnas against the JBLM Bettie Brigade. Then, the big league Cosa Nostra Donnas face off against The Naptown Roller Girls’ Tornado Sirens who have traveled all the way from Indianapolis for three games over the weekend. Naptown, the #18 ranked squad by Derbytron and #15 ranked by Derby News Network, plays Jet City in the morning, Oly Rollers at night and Rat City on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Oly Rollers are currently ranked #1 by Derbytron but just 12th by Derby News Network ad will be well rested and ready to rumble the road weary Sirens.

Tickets for all this great derby action can be purchased at the Skateland! door for $15 and wheels hit the floor at 6:00 PM.

The Puget Sound Collegiate League season continues with three games on Saturday at the RAC, weather permitting. Game one features a match-up between the league leaders, the 4-1 Lacey Saints, and the league cellar dwellers, the 0-4 Nisqually Silvers. First pitch is at noon. Game one has been rained out. The Silvers play their second game of the day at 2:30 PM against the 3-2 West Olympia Linx. And in game three, the the Tumwater Brewers and Hawks Prairie Cardinals square off looking to break their tie four fourth place. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 PM.

And finally, it will take a weather miracle for racing at South Sound Speedway to get the go ahead. But if there is a miracle, racing starts at 6:30 PM. Racing is cancelled today.

Thursday scoreboard: Brewers, Saints, A’s 18, Cards, Silvers, Linx 1

Five different Brewers drove in runs in the win including Jace Feldmeier (Olympic CC, Tumwater) who also scored a run and stole two bases. Lacey Saints starter Alexander Lee (Skagit Valley CC) and three other pitchers combined for a one hit shutout in a 6-0 defeat of the Nisqually Silvers. Lee pitched six no hit innings and struck out six while walking just one Silvers batter. Matt Bareiter (Centralia CC) relieved Lee and gave up the lone hit to the Silvers’ Kyle Ginter (Colorado State-Pueblo) after recording the first two outs in the seventh inning. Jacob Landeis (Green River CC) and Josh Moss (St. Martin’s, Rochester HS) each pitched 1-2-3 innings in the eighth and ninth innings and in total, the four Saints pitchers faced 30 batters, just three over the minimum in a nine inning game.

Dusty Kerns (Bellevue University) went 3-for-5 with two RBI and Mark Klick (Green River CC) drove in two more runs to lead the Saints offense. Eric O’Bryan (Centralia CC, Olympia HS) went 1-for-3 with two walks, two runs scored and a stolen base from the Saints’ leadoff spot.

In a day of solid pitching performances, Ryan Smith (Chemeketa CC, Black Hills) wouldn’t be outdone in the nightcap for the Olympia Athletics. Smith pitched seven innings and gave up just one earned run on five hits A’s in their 6-1 win over the West Olympia Linx.

The A’s drew first blood in the second inning when Drew Fosnes (Green River CC) was hit bay a pitch, advanced to second on a wild pitch, stole third base and scored on an error. Bret Bitow (Saint Martin’s) drove in what turned out to be the winning run in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead. The Linx cut the lead to one run in the sixth when Skyler Wheeler (Grays Harbor CC) doubled in Chris Womac (Green River CC, Olympia HS) but the A’s answered back with a run in the seventh and three more in the eighth to seal the win.

Womac went 2-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base for the Linx who lost their second game in a row following a seven game win streak.

Today (6/21): PSCL keeps rolling

This week’s PSCL series continue today with another three games at the RAC and Saint Martin’s.

Game one at the RAC pits the Tumwater Brewers against the Hawks Prairie Cardinals. The Cardinals got the better of the Brewers last night, 6-4 to run their league record to 2-2. The Brewers dropped to 1-3. Daniel Flahie’s (Grays Harbor CC) .388 batting average leads the way for the Cardinals with Chandler Tracy (Saint Martin’s) right behind him at .355. Tracy and Flahie also lead Hawks Prairie in RBI with seven and six respectively. The Brewers have struggled offensively and have only one regular hitting over .300. Kyle Holtman (Saint Clair County CC) leads the way with his .308 average and four RBI. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 PM.

Over at Saint Martin’s, the Lacey Saints and Nisqually Silvers continue their series after the Saints got the 6-3 win yesterday. Quinn Hartman (Green River CC) is batting .500 and has stolen seven bases to lead the Saints while Devin Ferguson (Centralia College, North Thurston) leads the team with nine RBI. Jordan Falcon (New Mexico Highlands University) is 5-for-12 in limited games for the Silvers and Brandon Evans (Colorado State-Pueblo) is hitting .318 to lead the Silvers’ regulars. The Saints are 3-1 in league play while the Silvers are still looking for their first win in games that count. First pitch is at 5:00 PM.

In the nightcap, the West Olympia Linx and Olympia Athletics play the rubber match of their three game series. The Linx handled the A’s on Tuesday, 8-3 but the A’s snapped the Linx seven game winning streak with a wild 3-2 victory in the tenth inning yesterday. Chris Womac’s (Green River, Olympia) .480 average and eight stolen bases paces the Linx while Kyle Thomson (Yakima Valley CC) has raised his average to .353 by going 5-for-8 in the series for the A’s. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 PM.

Puget Sound Collegiate League baseball

Lacey Saints 6, Nisqually Silvers 3
Olympia Athletics 3, West Olympia Linx 2
Hawks Prairie Cardinals 6, Tumwater Brewers 4

The Nisqually Silvers took a three run lead in the third inning but gave up six unanswered runs and dropped the game 6-3 to the Lacey Saints. After a Brandon Evans (Colorado State-Pueblo) single drove in two runs and Chase Lacomb (Colorado State-Pueblo) drove in another in the third for the Silvers, the Saints quickly tied the game in the top of the fourth after a bases loaded walk by Colby Fitzgerald (Centralia College) and a two run error on a ball hit by Jesus Acosta (Centralia College).

The Saints took the lead for good when Kyle Pegram (Pierce College) scored on a Tyler Zwosta (Centralia College) fielder’s choice in the sixth inning. Alexander Lee (Skagit Valley CC) and Pegram each drove in a run in the eighth inning when the Saints tacked on a pair for good measure.

Colin Nilson (PLU) went seven innings for the Saints giving up just the three runs in the third inning to pick up the win. Chase Wasson (Centralia College, Timberline HS) pitched a scoreless ninth inning to pick up the save.

—————————————————

Following a walk, Brian Clayton (Green River CC) scored the winning run in extra innings for the Olympia Athletics from first base on an error filled play giving the A’s the 3-2 win that snapped the West Olympia Linx’s seven game winning streak.

The Linx opened the scoring in the fourth inning on a Kyle Leady (Lower Columbia) double that scored Jordan Johansen (Corban College). The A’s Kyle Thomson (Yakima Valley CC) led off the sixth inning for the with a triple and was driven in two batters later on a sacrifice fly by Brett Gray (Central Washington) to tie the score at one. Thomson scored the go ahead run in the eighth but the A’s were unable to close the game and Mac Gridley (Lower Columbia) scored the tying run in the top of the ninth for the Linx before the A’s finally pushed across the winning run in the 10th.

The Linx’s Dan Eck (Yakima Valley CC) and the A’s Roderick Fields (Green River CC) each gave up just one run over six and seven innings respectively but neither figured in the decision. Despite blowing the save, Ryan Smith (Chemeketa CC, Black Hills HS) got the win for the A’s.

—————————————————

Chandler Tracy (Saint Martin’s) went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored and Daniel Flahie (Grays Harbor CC) went 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored in the Hawks Prairie Cardinal’s 6-3 win over the Tumwater Brewers.

Both teams scored runs in the first inning and were deadlocked going into the sixth inning. But in the sixth, the Cardinals broke the game open behind Flahie’s two run double that scored Conor Cook and Kohei Yamaguchi (Riseisha-Osaka). Flahie scored two batters later on an Adam Yunker (Seattle U) single to give the Cards a 4-1 lead. The Brewers committed four errors in the game and it cost them when Jacob Oster (Chemeketa CC) scored what proved to be the winning run in the seventh inning for the Cardinals.

Sam Shadle (Graham-Kapowsin HS) got the win and Eli Fulton (Clark CC, Capital HS) got the save for Hawks Prairie. Naoki Imoto (Olympic College) and Kyle Holtman (St. Clair County CC) each had two hits for Tumwater in the loss.
