Today (1/18): Saints Women Face Vikings for GNAC Lead; JBLM, MIA Open New Home
Fresh off of their thrilling 73-71 win over Simon Fraser on Thursday night, the first place Saint Martin’s women continue one of their toughest home stand of the season when they welcome Western Washington to Marcus Pavilion at 7:00 PM.
The Saints enter the game at 5-1 in the GNAC, one game in front of Alaska-Anchorage, Montana State-Billings and Western Washington, who all sit at 4-2.
The Vikings are led by McCleary’s Katie Colard, a 13 points per game scorer in her junior year at Western. Taylor Peacocke, a transfer from Sacramento State and former teammate of the Saints Liz Mills, has started seven games and is the Vikings only other double-digit scorer at 10.9 points per game. Western is coming off of a 78-58 win over Western Oregon in Monmouth on Thursday night that saw Peacocke go for 19 points and Sarah Hill record a double-double with 18 points and 16 rebounds.
The Saints are led by Chelsea Haskey’s 13.7 points per game. She is just 12 points of 1,000 career points but has struggled a big lately and scored just two points against Simon Fraser. Angela Gelhar has emerged as a consistent first or second scoring threat and is averaging 12.9 points per game.

Just down the road from Marcus Pavilion at 5700 Lacey Boulevard, the JBLM Bettie Brigade and MIA Derby Girls open their 2014 roller derby seasons in their new, shared Lacey home. The Bettie Brigade made the decision to move off base to make it easier for people to see them play and found a fellow tenant in MIA, who spent their entire existence practicing and playing at South Sound Sports Center in Tumwater.
Doors open at 5:00 PM with derby action getting underway at 6:00. There will be a beer garden for fans 21+. Tickets are $15 at the door.
