Olympia quarterback Derrick Becker won his appeal to play football for the Bears this season after originally being ruled ineligible by school administrators. The senior transferred from Capital during the summer. The contentious transfer makes the Spaghetti Bowl even more interesting this season. Mark your calendars for September 13th. – Link

Tumwater Brewers vs. West Olympia Linx – The RAC – 5:00 PM

Tumwater BrewersIt’s the last day of July and the last day of the PSCL season. The West Olympia Linx have been the dominant force in the league this season with just three losses and have two chances tonight to win one game for the championship.

The Tumwater Brewers are the #3 seed and won two elimination games yesterday to advance to today’s title games. They have to win game one to force a second game that would be slated to start at 7:30 PM.

SlanblayteeThe greatest name in Olympia sports comes to town this fall when Slanblaytee Kaye takes the court for the SPSCC men’s basketball team. Head coach Aaron Landon announced the signing of Kaye, who actually went by his middle name Clarence in high school, yesterday. Coach Landon says that the 6-0 guard from Logan High School in Union City, California will go by Slanblaytee as a member of the Clippers. – Link

Jimmy Belleville, a four time state champion wrestler at Black Hills, is back in town and has been named the wrestling coach at River Ridge. – Link

Game 9: Winner of game 8 vs. Nisqually Silvers – The RAC – 7:00 PM

Two elimination games on tap tonight. The Cardinals and Brewers have to win two games tonight to advance to the championship round on Wednesday against the West Olympia Linx while the Nisqually Silvers need to win the nightcap to move on.

The winner of game six moves on to play the loser of game seven tomorrow while the loser is eliminated. The winner of game seven moves directly to the championship game on Wednesday.


Monday news and notes (updated throughout the day)

Adam Conley keeps dealing. Last night the Olympia grad struck out six batters over six innings and didn’t allow a run en route to his tenth win of the season. Conley hasn’t allowed an earned run in his last three starts, all wins, and in his last ten starts he is 6-2 with a 1.99 ERA. For the season, he is 10-4 with a 3.22 ERA for the Jacksonville Suns, the double-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins. – Link

Stephen Vogt is back up with the Oakland A’s. He has played in four straight games and is 3-for-10 with three runs, three RBIs and a home run in his second stint this season with in the big leagues. The Visalia, California native winters in the Olympia area and coaches for Sandberg Baseball. – Link

Tumwater superstar running back Kevin Clark has been diagnosed with testicular cancer and his family is raising money to cover his medical expenses. The ’91 grad was one of the best running back to ever come out of the area. – Link to his gofundme.com site

South Puget Sound men’s basketball signed another player on Thursday inking Bethel guard JJ Johnson to play for the Clippers this season. Johnson was a two time SPSL honorable mention for the Braves. – Link

Kyle Warner

Tumwater alum Kyle Warner has been named to the first team of the 25th Annual USA College Football Division III Preseason All-America list. Warner, a junior wide receiver for Pacific Lutheran, set the Lutes single season receiving record last year 1,264 yards and scored eight touchdowns. Warner was named 2A player of the year in Tumwater’s 2010 state title run. – Link

Lower Columbia College announced the hiring of Eddie Smith to take over as the head baseball coach for the Red Devils. The 2002 North Thurston grad returns to the Northwest after a year as a volunteer assistant coach for his alma mater, Notre Dame. Smith was also an assistant at Santa Clara and Virginia before moving back to South Bend and played two years at Centralia College and two for the Irish and is a 2006 grad of Notre Dame. – Link

Adam Conley picked up his second win in a row last night allowing just one unearned run on two hits over seven innings in Jacksonville’s 8-1 win over the Tennessee Smokies. The Olympia grad is now 9-4 with a 3.41 ERA for Miami’s double-A affiliate. – Link

Joash Brodin was named the Atlantic League Player of the Week today after a week that saw him hit .429 (12-for-29) with three home runs including a walk off grand slam. The North Thurston alum drove in eight runs and stole three bases for the Long Island Ducks and now is second in the league with a .337 batting average and first in the runs scored with 62. – Link

Northwest Christian is looking for a new head baseball coach after Damon Ford announced today that he is moving to California. Ford spent three seasons at the helm of the Navigators after taking over for Don Heinze, who also moved to California. – Link

Saturday news & notes: Brodin’s waddle off slam

North Thurston alum Joash Brodin hit a “waddle off” grand slam last night in the Long Island Ducks’ 11-8 win over the Camden Riversharks. Skip to the 3:43:00 mark of the video above to see Brodin hit the very first pitch he saw in the at-bat well over the right field wall in Bethpage, New York to end the game. Brodin went 3-for-5 with two home runs and seven RBIs in total and is now hitting .336 with 11 homers and 42 RBIs for the independent Ducks.  – Box score

Olympia’s Kramer Champlin relieved Lansing starter Daniel Norris after a rain delay and gave up just two hits over the next 3 1/3 innings to pick up his fifth win of the season in a 2-1 Lugnuts win over the Clinton Lumberjacks. Champlin is now 5-2 with a 3.75 ERA this season. – Box score
