Saturday scoreboard: Saints softball splits, baseball sweeps; Budd Bay Rugby advances

Sam Munger hit a three run home run and pitched a complete game to pick up her 15th win of the season in Saint Martin’s 6-5 win in game one. Lacey McGladrey went 2-for-2 with two RBI and Megan Antonovich went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

In game two, Taylor Bakos gave up five unearned runs in the first three innings and the Saints were baffled by Western Oregon’s Myranda Sawyer and lost to the Wolves 5-1. Lacey McGladrey had two of the Saints’ four hits.

With the split and thanks to Central Washington’s sweep of first place Montana State Billings, the Saints move to four games back of the Yellowjackets. However, Billings’ magic number to clinch the GNAC’s automatic NCAA tournament bid is now just two.

Saint Martin’s didn’t do anything easy on Saturday but still managed to sweep Central Washington. After being down 5-1 after the top of the third inning, game one was eventually won on a two out infield chopper by Bobby Twedt that scored Casey Thorpe from third.

In game two, the Saints fell behind seven runs in the first three innings but scored the next 12 runs, including a six run inning in the third and a five run inning in the fifth, and held on for a 12-10 win.

Thursday scoreboard: Saints pound Wildcats; Blazers, Rams, Cougars score soccer wins

College softball

Saint Martin’s 13, Central Washington 0 – More from SMUSaints.com

On March 4th, the Saint Martin’s softball team lost a game to Central Washington 7-3. However, the Saints protested a home run in the bottom of the first inning that was originally called foul and then changed to fair after the umpires discussed the call at the request of the Wildcats’ coaches.  The protest was upheld, the loss was struck from the Saints’ record and today the game resumed from just before the home run happened over a month ago.

And this time, Sam Munger got the out and proceeded to pitch a two hit, five inning mercy rule shutout and the Saints won easily, 13-0. Saint Martin’s had 17 hits in the game including six combined hits for Munger and Morgan Klemm that accounted for five of the Saints’ runs. Lacey McGladrey went 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBI.

The Saints have won three straight games to move to 28-15-1 overall and 18-10 in the GNAC.

Boys Soccer

Timberline 5, Yelm 2
North Thurston 4, W.F. West 0
Capital 2, Wilson 1
Centralia 5, River Ridge 1
Aberdeen 6, Black Hills 0
Olympia 1, South Kitsap 1

Xavier Wurtele and Dan Ceban each scored two goals for Timberline in their 5:2 win over Yelm on Thursday night. Wurtele struck first for the Blazers with a goal in the 37th minute, the only goal for the two teams in the first 60 minutes. Including Casey French’s goal in the 61st minute that opened up the floodgates, the two teams combined for six goals in the final twenty minutes of play.

Joey Renaud scored his first hat trick for North Thurston in their 4:0 win over W.F. West in the first game of the South Sound Stadium doubleheader. Keeper Desean Freeman had two saves for the Rams to earn the shutout.

Matteo Nartempi had the game winning goal in the 76th minute in Capital’s 2:1 win over Wilson at Stadium Bowl in Tacoma. Bryce Joling scored early for the Cougars with a goal in the third minute but the Rams answered back quickly with a goal of their own in the third minute from Chris Peterson. The two teams then battled for 73 minutes before Nartempi’s game winner.

Today (4/19): South Sound Stadium hosts soccer doubleheader

North Thurston kicks off a doubleheader of soccer action at South Sound Stadium at 5:00 PM with a 2A EvCo matchup with W.F. West. The Rams are fourth in conference at 4-4 while the Bearcats are fifth at 2-6. The two teams met on March 22nd and played to a 1:1 regulartion tie before a Nick Salazar overtime goal gave North Thurston the 2:1 victory.

In the second half of the doubleheader, Timberline hosts 3A Narrows League rival Yelm. The Blazers come into the game at 1-2-1 in league just ahead of 0-3-1 The Tornadoes. It will be the first meeting between the two teams this season. First kick is scheduled for 7:00 PM.

Rest in peace, Mia – Friends of Mia Alumni Soccer Tournament

I was heartbroken yesterday to hear about the passing of five year-old Mia Deligeannis, who fought bravely against childhood leukemia for three years of her life. My thoughts have been with her and her family since I heard the news. I never met Mia and have only met her dad once but I was inspired by her toughness and her bravery through so much pain. No child or family should have to go through what Mia and her family went through and though Mia may have passed, the memory of her and her bravery lives on and will continue to touch, inspire and help others.

One way to honor Mia and help her family and families in the same situation is to come to the Friends of Mia Alumni Soccer Tournament on Saturday, June 9th at South Sound Stadium. The tournament will feature eight teams comprised of soccer alumni from Timberline, North Thurston, Olympia, Capital, Tumwater, Black Hills, Yelm and River Ridge High Schools. The teams will play a round robin tournament starting at 8:15 AM and the top two teams from the East and West division will move onto the semifinals with the final game scheduled for 4:15 PM that afternoon.

To play in the tournament, there is a $50 donation to Friends of Mia. Players receive a tournament jersey, there will be a post tournament party and winners get a keepsake and have bragging rights to the FoM Trophy displayed year round at O’Blarneys. If you would like to play, you can sign up and make your donation on brownpapertickets.com. If you have any questions, please contact me at olysportsblog@gmail.com or contact your alumni representative. You can find their information on the tournament’s Facebook page. And while you are at it, please share the page with your friends. Spectators are free but donations will gladly be accepted.

Please come out and support your favorite high school soccer alum and the Deligeannis family. It will be a really fun, hard fought tournament – the first of it’s kind between Olympia area high schools – for a good cause and in memory of a tough little girl.

Rest in peace, Mia.

Offense was scarce at Dehler Park in Billings on Sunday when the two teams combined for just two runs total over 16 innings, the lowest scoring doubleheader in GNAC history. In game one, the Saints’ Tommy Deboer gave up just four hits and struck out six Yellowjackets in eight scoreless innings of work. Travis Jones’ double in the top of the ninth inning drove in Mario Sanelli for the only run of the game and Zach Carter worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth to preserve the win for the Saints.

In game two, Kaleb Wilson and Josh Moss combined to give up one run on four hits for the Saints but were out dueled by Matt Eames’ two hit, seven inning complete game shutout. With the weekend split, the Saints are now 11-25 overall and 7-11 in GNAC play.
