The Oly Rollers’ Cosa Nostra Donnas dominated Sac City’s Capital Punishers 273-61 on Saturday night. Meanwhile, the Skateland! lighting defeated my admittedly poor photographing skills. Please enjoy some grainy, not well lit photos from the bout.

Tonight (6/30): Oly Cosas host Sac City

Skateland! is the place to be tonight for some derby action when the Oly Rollers’ Cosa Nostra Donnas welcome Sac City’s Capital Punishers to town for a Women’s Flat Track Derby Association bout. Despite convincingly winning two matches last weekend against Indianapolis’ Naptown and Dockyard, Oly dropped to second place in the Derbytron rankings behind New York’s Gotham Girls Roller Derby, the team Oly lost to in the 2011 WFTDA championship bout.

Sac City is a new WFTDA squad that was just sanctioned in early June and are playing in their first bout as WFTDA members. The Capital Punishers are coming off of a 183-83 win over SoCal Roller Derby last weekend in Sacramento.

Tickets for tonight’s bout will be available at the doors for $14. Doors open at 5:00 6:00 PM and the action will get underway at 6:00 6:30.

Lacey Saints 4, West Olympia Linx 3
Tumwater Brewers 4, Olympia Athletics 3

Bo Pearson’s (PLU) double with two outs and two on in the bottom of the ninth inning plated both Dusty Kerns (Bellevue University) and Eric O’Bryan (Centralia College, Olympia HS) to give the Lacey Saints the 4-3 comeback victory over the West Olympia Linx in game one at the RAC. The Linx had taken the 3-2 lead just an inning earlier when Sam Williams (Lower Columbia CC) drove in two runs of his own with a two out double.

Pearson went 2-for-5 with three RBI on the day and Devin Ferguson (Centralia College, North Thurston HS) hit a solo homerun to lead off the third inning for the Saints. Chase Wasson (Centralia College, Timberline HS) got the win while Micah Donor (George Fox) got the loss for the Linx.

In game two, Jace Feldmeier (Olympic College, Tumwater HS) went 2-for-3 and drove in a run and Naoki Imoto (Olympic College) went 1-for-2 and scored a run to lead the Tumwater Brewers to a 4-3 win over the Olympia Athletics despite just four hits for the team. Michael Calderon (Bellevue University) gave up two earned runs in five innings to pick up the win for the Brewers.

Drew Fosnes (Green River CC) went 1-for-2 with a triple, two RBI and a stolen base for the A’s.

Today (6/23): Tecmo, derby definitely; Baseball, racing doubtful

20120623-092244.jpgIn personal 10 year-old me excitement level at an all time high news, The Brick on Trosper is hosting the inaugural Pacific Northwest Tecmo Chamionships and I will be representing Oly Sports hard. Tecmo Bowl and Tecmo Super Bowl were always my favorite video games growing up, even when the technology got better and better. So there is no way that I can pass up playing a Tecmo Super Bowl tournament. I was so obsessed with the original Tecmo Bowl that I actually kept a notebook that tracked the statistics for all of my games. When Tecmo Super Bowl was released and kept the stats for you, I didn’t have to keep that notebook anymore, but I was still obsessed.

The tournament gets underway with pool play at noon that determines the seeding for the double elimination tournament that will crown a champion. You can still register for the tournament at The Brick on Trosper and the buy-in is $20. For more information, visit PNWTecmo.com.

Following my triumphant victory at the Tecmo tournament, head on over to Skateland! (I have decided I will always refer to Skateland! as Skateland! with an exclamation point from here on out on this blog) for the Oly Rollers derby doubleheader.

The warmup bout pits the fresh meat Bella Donnas against the JBLM Bettie Brigade. Then, the big league Cosa Nostra Donnas face off against The Naptown Roller Girls’ Tornado Sirens who have traveled all the way from Indianapolis for three games over the weekend. Naptown, the #18 ranked squad by Derbytron and #15 ranked by Derby News Network, plays Jet City in the morning, Oly Rollers at night and Rat City on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Oly Rollers are currently ranked #1 by Derbytron but just 12th by Derby News Network ad will be well rested and ready to rumble the road weary Sirens.

Tickets for all this great derby action can be purchased at the Skateland! door for $15 and wheels hit the floor at 6:00 PM.

The Puget Sound Collegiate League season continues with three games on Saturday at the RAC, weather permitting. Game one features a match-up between the league leaders, the 4-1 Lacey Saints, and the league cellar dwellers, the 0-4 Nisqually Silvers. First pitch is at noon. Game one has been rained out. The Silvers play their second game of the day at 2:30 PM against the 3-2 West Olympia Linx. And in game three, the the Tumwater Brewers and Hawks Prairie Cardinals square off looking to break their tie four fourth place. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 PM.

And finally, it will take a weather miracle for racing at South Sound Speedway to get the go ahead. But if there is a miracle, racing starts at 6:30 PM. Racing is cancelled today.

Today (6/9): Tourneys time; PSCL play four; Underground Derby championships; Racing

It’s another huge day of sports in the South Sound. It all starts early in the morning with the Capitol City Men’s Amateur Golf Tournament. Jon McCaslin has won the tournament three times in a row and The Olympian has a preview article featuring Tumwater High School alum Kyle Schrader. Tee off for the tournament at Capitol City Golf Club is at 7:30 AM.

Shortly after tee time, the Friends of Mia Alumni Soccer Tournament gets underway at South Sound Stadium. Soccer alumni from Black Hills, Capital, North Thurston, Olympia, River Ridge, Shelton/Yelm, Timberline and Tumwater gather to honor Mia and raise money for childhood cancer. First kick of pool play is at 8:45 AM. The semifinals start at 2:15 PM with the finals kicking off at 4:15. Everybody is invited to the post tournament party and benefit at Faith Community Center at 6:00. For the full schedule and more information, visit the Oly Sports post from yesterday. All events are free and donations will be accepted.

And the tournaments keep on rolling along with Budd Bay Rugby’s 20th annual Tatunka 7’s Tournament at The Evergreen State College. The tournament used to coincide with Evergreen’s Super Saturday but even after the elimination of Super Saturday, the tournament continues on the Saturday before graduation. The action gets underway at 10:00 AM.

If golf, soccer and rugby aren’t enough for you, the Puget Sound Collegiate League plays a baseball quadruple-header on Saturday. First up at noon, the Tumwater Brewers take on the West Olympia Linx. Then at 2:30, the Brewers play game two against the Nisqually Silvers. In the evening games, the Lacey Saints and the Olympia Athletics play two starting at 5:00 PM. All four games take place on the wonderful turf surface at the Regional Athletic Center. All PSCL games are free.

Golf, soccer, rugby, baseball. What else could you want? How about some championship roller derby action? Skateland! will be rocking when the Underground Derby League has their interleague championships. The Rolling Regulators, Fembots, Oly Outlaws and South Bay Bombers will battle it out to see who takes home the hardware. Tickets are $15 at the door, doors open at 6:00 PM and derby action gets underway at 6:30.

And finally, weather pending, petrolheads (I’ve been watching a lot of Top Gear on BBC America lately) get their fix this weekend at South Sound Speedway. Hobby Stocks, Mini Stocks, FSCRA and Legends start qualifying at 5:00 PM with racing getting underway at 6:30 PM. Tickets are $12 at the gates.

Dane Cheatly drove in three runs and Drew Fosnes went 2-for-3 with two runs scored an RBI to lead the Olympia A’s to a 7-4 win over the Hawks Prairie Cardinals. Ryan Smith struck out 12 batters in seven innings to earn the win. Chandler Tracy went 3-for-4 for the Cardinals in the loss.

Kyle Doucette and Tyler Grant each drove in a run for the Tumwater Brewers and five pitchers combined to hold the Nisqually Silvers to one run in the Brewers’ 3-1 victory. Ryan Taylor pitched five innings and gave up just two earned runs but was saddled with the loss for the Silvers. Devin Smith got the win and Kegan Duz-Agular worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to pick up the save for the Brewers.

Today (6/3): PSCL doubleheader; Oly Rollers

The PSCL plays a doubleheader today at noon at the RAC. The games kick off with the Hawks Prairie Cardinals taking on the Olympia Athletics at noon. Both teams picked up wins on opening day yesterday. Then, at 2:30, the Nisqually Silvers take on the Tumwater Brewers. The Brewers knocked off the Lacey Saints in the opening day nightcap while Nisqually got blitzed 12-3 by the Cardinals.

Tonight, Skateland will be rocking when the Oly Rollers’ Cosa Nostra Donnas take on the Tampa Bay Derby Darlins who, yes indeed, have traveled all the way from Florida for this bout. Tampa Bay is ranked #23 in the Derby News Network power rankings but lost to the Rat City Rollergirls all-stars 217-75 in Seattle last night. The Oly Rollers are ranked at #12. Tickets are available at the door for $12 and derby action gets underway at 6:00 PM.

Today (6/2): PSCL, Sounders U23s, M.I.A. Derby Girls, Buzz, racing

Good morning Olympia. Big sports day in the South Sound and it all kicks off with the season openers for the Puget Sound Collegiate League. The PSCL is a developmental wood bat baseball league featuring six teams and one traveling all-star team comprised of college baseball players from around the Northwest. In it’s third year, the league plays the majority of their games at the RAC and a handful of games at Saint Martin’s over the next two months. Today, the season gets underway at noon with a game between the Olympia Athletics and the West Olympia Lynx. At 5:00, the Nisqually Silvers take on the Hawks Prairie Cardinals and the Lacey Saints play the Tumwater Brewers at 7:30. Triple-header in Lacey!

The junior version of American soccer’s biggest and most bitter rivalry invades Tumwater this evening when the Sounders U23s host the Portland Timbers U23s at Tumwater Stadium. The Sounders are 2-1-3 on the season and are in fourth place in the Premier Development League’s Northwest Division behind Washington Crossfire, the Kitsap Pumas and the first place and undefeated Timbers U23s. Portland is coming off a 2:1 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps U23s yesterday afternoon in Portland. Tickets are still available at the gates for $10. Fist kick is at 6:00 PM. For more, read the Oly Sports series on the game here, here and here.

Tumwater also plays host to a brand new roller derby team tonight at Tumwater Indoor Sports. The M.I.A. Derby Girls host the Coffin County Slaughter Kittens of Kelso in just their second event. Doors open at 5:30 and the bout gets underway at 6:30. Tickets are $15 at the door and bring you ID for the beer garden, a feature of the M.I.A Derby Girls bouts that no other local roller derby team can offer.

The Olympia Library hosts author Buzz Bissinger tonight at 7:30. Bissinger is probably most famous for his book Friday Night Lights, the story of football in small town Texas that has been adapted for a movie and television series (though he has reservations about both). He has also authored Three Nights in August, a book about a three game series between the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs and co-authored Shooting Stars with Lebron James. Bissinger is in town promoting his new book, Father’s Day and is an interesting, opinionated, noted crank and his talk tonight should not be missed.

And finally, for all you motorheads, racing season continues at South Sound Speedway. Tonight, the 3/8th oval hosts mini stocks, street stocks, legends and the always popular and my personal favorite, bump to pass. Racing starts at 6:30 and tickets are just $12 for adults.
