The Olympian on the surprise Olympia girls
The Olympian has an interesting profile on the Olympia girls basketball team, a surprise entry into the state tournament at 10-14. It pays to get hot at the end of the season. The Bears were rewarded with a trip to Spokane to face Gonzaga Prep and John Stockton’s daughter in the regionals.
Wallace wins MVP, coaches Landram, Brown and Ham honored
River Ridge’s Brad Wallace was named the 2A EvCo’s boys basketball MVP and his coach, Jeremy Landram, was named co-Coach of the Year along with North Thurston’s Tim Brown. Tuesday scoreboard: Hawks, Rams to regionals, Geoducks done
Women’s basketball
Corban 60, Evergreen 48
Sophomore Danielle Swain had 16 points and Sami Clark added 11 but it wasn’t quite enough to get the 8th seeded Evergreen Geoducks past the 10th ranked team in the nation, Corban College, in the first round of the Cascade Collegiate Conference playoffs. Swain, a Black Hills alum, did set single season team records for blocks and rebounds in the game. The Geoducks finish the season with an overall record of 7-21 but played better than their record indicates. They will return their entire team next season except for one senior, Mele Rich.
Girl’s basketball
River Ridge 56, North Thurston 54
North Thurston cut a 16 point deficit and tied the game at 52 but River Ridge scored the next four points and held on to win, 56-54 securing a berth into the state regionals for the ninth straight season. Next up for the Hawks is a Saturday afternoon meeting with Port Angeles At Mt. Tahoma High School in Tacoma. The Rams season comes to an end.
Boy’s basketball
North Thurston 62, Washougal 56
A good Washougal crowd that made W.F West High School in Chehalis feel like a home game wasn’t quite enough to push the Panthers over the top to beat North Thurston on Tuesday night. The Rams got 30 points (or more) from senior Ben Broeker and made their free throws at the end to move into the state regionals for the first time since 2007. The Rams will play White River on Friday night at Mt. Tahoma.
Monday scoreboard: Oly falls just short
Boy’s basketball
Curtis 37, Olympia 36
In a hard fought, defensive battle, Olympia came up just a little bit short in the 4A Bi-District title game on Monday night at the ShoWare Center in Kent. The Bears came back from a 22-13 deficit at halftime but missed a three pointer that would have won it as time expired. Alex Johnson led the way for the Bears with 17 points but 4A Narrows League MVP Dominick Franks was held to just seven points and no other Bear scored in double digits. Darius Johnson-Wilson had 13 points for Curtis. Olympia moves on to play either Bothell or Lake Stevens in the 4A regionals at Auburn High School on Friday.
Girl’s basketball
Auburn Mountainview 44, Timberline 31
Emerald Ridge 54, Olympia 43
Sasha Weber had 13 points for Timberline but it wasn’t enough to take the third seed out of the 3A Bi-District. Instead the Blazers get the #4 seed and will play 19-4 Shorecrest at Juanita High School on Saturday at 6:00 PM. With their loss to Emerald Ridge, the Olympia girls get the #8 seed out of the 4A Bi-District and will have to travel to Spokane for a Saturday night game against either Gonzaga Prep or Chiawana.
Today (2/20): President’s Day Playoffs
The Olympia boy’s basketball team plays for it’s first district title tonight against Curtis at the ShoWare Center in Kent. Curtis is 19-6 on the season and the two teams met in the state tournament last season with Curtis getting the better of the Bears, 64-49. Tip-off is set for 6:00 PM. The News-Tribune has the full preview
In girl’s basketball action, Olympia plays Emerald Ridge at 4:00 PM at Stadium High School and Timberline plays Auburn Mountainview at 4:00 PM at Clover Park High School. Both the Bears and Blazers have already qualified for the state regionals regardless of what happens today.
