The Soldiers’ Chehales Tapscott leads the International Basketball League in scoring with 30 points per game and Cory Largent is fourth with 22.5 ppg. The Reign are led by River Ridge grad Giovanne Woods and former Evergreen guard Mike Ward who are each scoring 18.4 points per game.

Tip-off is at 7:00 PM.

Today (4/20): Reign open against Slam

The 2012 International Basketball League season kicks off tonight when the Olympia Reign hosts the Bellingham Slam in their new home at the Skookum Creek Events Center at the Little Creek Casino.

The game features a slew of former Saint Martin’s and Evergreen basketball players including the Geoducks’ Nate Menefee, Mike Ward, Marcus Whitaker and Nicholas Moore for the Reign and former Saints Blake Poole and Jeremy Green for the Slam.

Tip-off is set for 7:00 PM. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 Players Club members and children 12 under are free. And the Skookum Creek Events Center will feature something that the Reign have never been able to offer before at their home games, a beer garden open for fans 21 and over.

Read more about the Reign’s opener in The Olympian’s preview. The Olympian also had a feature about Blake Poole yesterday that is worth a read.

Men’s college basketball review

I’m back from Hawaii and I only missed the end of the high school basketball season and the college basketball season during my vacation, that’s all. Now that we have a bit of a lull until spring sports start next week, let’s take a quick look back at the college basketball season here in Olympia. We’ll start today with the men.

The Evergreen State College

Record: 1-26 overall, 0-18 Cascade Collegiate Conference
Best Win: 79-72 – Pacific Lutheran – November 26th
Worst Loss: 64-109 – Eastern Oregon – January 28th

Players graduating (3): Patrick Lewis – 12.3 ppg (2nd on team) and 7.6 rpg (1st), Larry Green – 11.4 ppg (3rd), Marcus Buren – 2.2 ppg
Key returners: Mike Derosier – 9.4 ppg (4th), Elzie Dickens – 8.8 ppg (5th) and 6.7 rpg (3rd), Travis Wagner – 8.0 ppg (7th)

Two years after going to the second round of the NAIA Division II tournament, Evergreen became one of ten teams in the NCAA and NAIA to win one game or less this season. The loss of the team’s leading scorer, Marice Tolliver, at the end of December coupled with the loss of Tyrell Stephens at the same time and Julian Holliday early that month and Mikey Hope in pre-season left the Geoducks drastically shorthanded. They played with only seven players for much of the conference season and dressed only six for a couple of games and those numbers were only because they added 5’3″, 115 pound freshman Les Jones in the middle of the season. Arvin Mosley Jr. has a tough task ahead of him this off-season with only Derosier, Dickens, Wagner and Jones returning.

Saint Martin’s University

Record: 10-17 overall, 6-12 Great Northwest Athletic Conference
Best win: 74-65 – Western Oregon – January 14th – WOU was 1st in conference at the time
Worst loss: 70-72 – Alaska-Fairbanks – February 18th – UAF won only two games in the GNAC

Players graduating (3): Jeremy Green – 18.3 ppg (1st on team) and 8.0 rpg (1st), Brok Pendleton – 15.1 ppg (2nd) and 7.0 rpg (2nd), Ryan Votaw – 7.2 ppg (4th)
Key returners: Roger O’Neill – 13.0 ppg (3rd) and 4.2 rpg (3rd), Brady Bomber – 4.7 apg (1st), Eric Taylor (injured)

An eight game losing streak in the second half of the conference season did the Saints in this season. While losses to the Seattle Pacifics and Alaska-Anchorages of the GNAC are understandable, it was the losses to Alaska-Fairbanks and Simon Fraser that made absolutely no sense and kept the Saints out of the GNAC playoffs that they hosted. The Saints started the same five players all season long including the three seniors – Green, Pendleton and Votaw. With those three graduating, the Saints will have to replace 40.6 of the 69.1 points per game that they scored this season. Senior leadership from O’Neill and Bomber will help, but they need Taylor to come back from injury and Alex Williams to finally get healthy and hope somebody steps up from the group of nondescript backups to take the reins.

South Puget Sound Community College

Record: 12-16 overall, 8-8 NWAACC West
Best win: 69-66 – Pierce College – February 13th – Start of a 4-1 finish to the regular season and gave them the tiebreaker over Pierce for place in the playoffs.
Worst loss: 78-110 – Tacoma CC – February 15th

Graduating players (3): Lucky Lagerberg – 9.25 ppg (5th on team) and 5.43 rpg (2nd), Tyler Vandenhoff – 3.54 ppg, Caleb Pace (injured)
Key returners: Anye Turner – 15.32 ppg (1st), 11.93 rpg (1st), 2.21 blocks per game (1st) and 2.07 steals per game (1st), Scotty Ewing – 13.71 ppg (2nd) and 2.32 apg (1st), Deshawn Hayes – 12.33 ppg (3rd), Jamey Smith – 9.57 ppg (4th)

Black Hills High School’s Anye Turner blew up this season leading SPSCC to the NWAACC playoffs after winning only four games last year, and he’s only a freshman. In fact, the Clippers top four scorers are all freshman and will be expected to build on a season that progressively got better culminating in a 4-1 end to the regular season that got them to Kennewick.

Tuesday scoreboard: Hawks, Rams to regionals, Geoducks done

Women’s basketball

Corban 60, Evergreen 48

Sophomore Danielle Swain had 16 points and Sami Clark added 11 but it wasn’t quite enough to get the 8th seeded Evergreen Geoducks past the 10th ranked team in the nation, Corban College, in the first round of the Cascade Collegiate Conference playoffs. Swain, a Black Hills alum, did set single season team records for blocks and rebounds in the game. The Geoducks finish the season with an overall record of 7-21 but played better than their record indicates. They will return their entire team next season except for one senior, Mele Rich.

Girl’s basketball

River Ridge 56, North Thurston 54

North Thurston cut a 16 point deficit and tied the game at 52 but River Ridge scored the next four points and held on to win, 56-54 securing a berth into the state regionals for the ninth straight season. Next up for the Hawks is a Saturday afternoon meeting with Port Angeles At Mt. Tahoma High School in Tacoma. The Rams season comes to an end.

Boy’s basketball

North Thurston 62, Washougal 56

A good Washougal crowd that made W.F West High School in Chehalis feel like a home game wasn’t quite enough to push the Panthers over the top to beat North Thurston on Tuesday night. The Rams got 30 points (or more) from senior Ben Broeker and made their free throws at the end to move into the state regionals for the first time since 2007. The Rams will play White River on Friday night at Mt. Tahoma.

Saturday scoreboard: too much for one headline

Men’s basketball

Alaska-Fairbanks 72, Saint Martin’s 70 – More from AlaskaNanooks.com
Northwest 86, Evergreen 51 – More from Evergreen athletics
SPSCC 104, Grays Harbor 59 – Box score

Brok Pendleton had 20 points and Roger O’Neill added 12 but Saint Martin’s couldn’t get the job done in the end and lost to the Nanooks 72-70.  Fairbanks ended a 13 game losing streak with their win and the Saints have now dropped eight straight games. Evergreen got 19 points from senior Patrick Lewis on senior night and actually led 15-3 early in the first half, but the Geoducks were outscored 83-38 the rest of the way.  Evergreen finishes the season 1-26.  South Puget Sound got 35 points from Deshawn Hayes and another double-double from Anye Turner in their thrashing of Grays Harbor.

Women’s basketball

Saint Martin’s 66, Alaska-Fairbanks 58 – More from SMUSaints.com
Evergreen 66, Northwest 62 – More from Evergreen athletics
SPSCC 69, Grays Harbor 58 – Box score

Two seniors on senior night helped Saint Martin’s knock off the Nanooks. Megan Teade had 12 points and Andrea Schutt had 11 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Jordyn Richardson led the way with 17 points.  Evergreen earned their first trip to the playoffs since the 2007-2008 season with their win over Northwest and Concordia’s loss to Eastern Oregon.  Jessica Edge had 17 points to lead the way for the Geoducks.  South Puget Sound had four players score in double digits, including 20 points from Aisha Jones and 17 points from Alychia Colon in their victory over Grays Harbor.

Boy’s basketball

Olympia 63, Mt. Rainier 59
North Thurston 70, Tumwater 63

With their win, Olympia advances to the district title game at 6:00 PM on Monday night at the ShoWare Center in Kent.  And with their win, North Thurston advances to a loser-out, winner-to-state regionals game on Tuesday night against Washougal

Girl’s basketball

Olympia 47, Central Kitsap 44
North Thurston 52, Tumwater 51
River Ridge 43, Woodland 38
Prairie 75, Timberline 47

Olympia earned a state berth with their victory over Central Kitsap.  It is the first time they’ve been to the regionals since 2003. North Thurston and River Ridge’s victories set up a loser-out, winner-to-state regionals game between the two on Tuesday night. Timberline loses in the semifinals but they are already bound for state.

Geoducks scoring margin and national rank

It has been a historically bad season for The Evergreen State College men’s basketball team. The poor Geoducks are just 1-25 this season and haven’t really been close except for their one win over PLU in November.  They lost their best player and lost two other starters before the new year and have played with just seven players for most of the conference season.

It got me wondering, is Evergreen the worst college basketball team in the NCAA or NAIA this season?  The answer, thankfully, is no based on scoring margin average.  The following is a breakdown of all the teams in the NCAA or NAIA that have one or less wins ranked by how much they lose by on average…

1. Bluefield State – NCAA Division II – 1-21 – Outscored by 614 points/27.91 points per game
2. Franciscan University – NCAA Division III – 0-23 – 614/26.7 ppg
3. Principia College – NCAA Division III – 0-23 – 523/22.73 ppg
4. Millikin University – NCAA Division III – 1-23 – 537/22.37 ppg
5. Dillard University – NAIA Division I – 1-21 – 471/21.41 ppg
6. Huston-Tillotson – NAIA Division I – 0-26 – 532/20.46 ppg
7. Evergreen – NAIA Division II – 1-25 – 561/20.03 ppg
8. Lock Haven University – NCAA Division II – 0-22 – 414/18.18 ppg
9. Binghamton University – NCAA Division I – 0-25 – 407/16.28 ppg
10. Nyack College – NCAA Division II – 0-26 – 419/16.11 ppg
11. Elmira College – NCAA Division III – 1-23 – 351/14.62 ppg
12. Macalester College – NCAA Division III – 1-23 – 348/14.5 ppg

Evergreen mercifully wraps up their season on Saturday night against NAIA Division II #10 ranked Northwest University at the CRC Gymnasium. Tip-off is at 7:30 PM.

Friday recap: No playoff surprises, Geoducks struggle in Oregon, Saints struggle in California

Girl’s basketball

River Ridge 53, Hockinson 30
Mark Morris 64, Tumwater 41
North Thurston 59, Woodland 56 – 2OT
W.F. West 58, Black Hills 38

No surprises on the girl’s side of the 2A District IV playoff bracket on Friday night. River Ridge got an easy win over Hockinson behind Necy Wade’s 13 points and Kyahri Adams’ 14 points, Mark Morris three pointed Tumwater to death, Woodland took North Thurston to double overtime before the Rams prevailed thanks to Catie Mets’ 23 points and W.F. West beat Black Hills for the third time this season.

Next up: River Ridge plays Mark Morris on Tuesday in Tumwater at 6:00 PM and the North Thurston/W.F. West game follows at 7:45. On the loser’s side of the bracket, Tumwater plays Hockinson at 6:00 PM and Black Hills takes on Woodland at 7:45 at W.F. West in Chehalis.

Boy’s basketball

Bellarmine 68, Olympia 51

Dominick Francks scored 22 points but was the only Olympia player to crack double digits, a rarity for the usually balanced offensive attack of the Bears, and Bellarmine ran right past them in the second half to secure the #1 seed out of the 4A Narrows.  Oly led at halftime, 30-24, but Bellarmine outscored them in the second half 44-21. The Bears will next host either Kentlake or Rogers on Tuesday night.

Women’s basketball

Oregon Tech 61, Evergreen 45 – More from the Geoducks

Despite the loss, Evergreen remains only a half game out of a CCC playoff spot. They are chasing Concordia, who lost to Corban tonight.

Men’s basketball

Oregon Tech 90, Evergreen 62 – More from the Geoducks
