Today (3/11): Olympic And Okanogan College visit Lacey
Rainy weather forced the Olympic College baseball team from Bremerton to move their home opening doubleheader against Okanogan College to the Regional Athletic Complex in Lacey. The first game starts at 11:00 AM.
Blake Poole’s season comes to an end

Saint Martin’s alum Blake Poole’s fantastic rookie season in Germany came to an end on Saturday with a 74-67 playoff loss to Uni-Riesen Leipzig. Poole scored 15 points and had 15 rebounds in the loss and finished the season averaging 14.9 points per game and 12.9 rebounds per game. He had 20 double-doubles in 26 games and led the team in rebounding in all but one game this season. His best game came on January 28th when he scored 21 points and pulled down 19 boards in a 91-78 defeat of Herzöge Wolfenbüttel.

Saint Martin’s had two more comeback wins on Saturday before losing the final game to Montana State-Billings and are now 7-13 overall and 3-1 in the GNAC, good enough for second place behind Western Oregon. In the first game, the Saints scored two runs in the bottom of the 10th on an error by the Yellowjackets catcher on a Chaz Ferreira bunt and in the second game, down 7-4, the Saint scored five runs in the sixth inning and held on for the victory.

Tough day for Saint Martin’s who dropped two to the Yellowjackets and fell out of first place in the GNAC. Timberline graduate Annaleisha Parsley picked up the win for the Yellowjackets in game one. Morgan Klemm went 4-for-8 in the doubleheader to lead the Saints.

Today (3/10): Saints and Yellowjackets continue, boys soccer kicks off
The Saint Martin’s/Montana State-Billings softball and baseball doubleheader extravaganza continues on Saturday and even includes some extra baseball from a third game. It all starts at 11:00 AM at the SMU baseball field when the Saints and Yellowjackets continue their 2-2 suspended game from Friday afternoon. It then continues with a doubleheader at both the baseball and softball field with first pitch for both games scheduled for 1:00 PM. Weather may move the baseball games to the RAC, which is a good bet since it is currently pouring.
Boys soccer kicks off around town today with a handful of games. At South Sound Stadium are a fun pair of alumni games. The Timberline boys play Blazer alumni at 3:00 PM and North Thurston plays their alumni at 7:00 PM and there will be a 21-and-0ver alumni after party at O’Blarney’s following the games.
Black Hills and Capital also kick off their seasons on Saturday with a 2:00 PM game at Black Hills High School.

Saint Martin’s 2, MSU-Billings 2 after four innings. Postponed due to darkness, will resume tomorrow
In game one of today’s doubleheader, Saint Martin’s took a 7-0 lead before MSU-Billings scored eight straight runs to take an 8-7 lead in the eighth inning. But Chandler Tracy doubled in two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning and freshman Zach Carter pitched a scoreless ninth inning and the Saints came away with another comeback victory, 9-8. Tracey went 4-for-4 in the game with a triple and two doubles. The second game was tied 2-2 when darkness forced the game to be postponed until 11:00 AM on Saturday morning.

Saint Martin’s freshman Sam Munger shut down the potent Billings offense pitching a five hitter in a 2-1 Saint victory in game one of this important GNAC weekend series. The Saints scored both of their runs in the first inning on an infield error and held on the rest of the way for the victory. In game two, the Saints held a 2-1 lead after four innings but couldn’t hold on losing 5-3. The Saints are now 7-2 in conference while the Yellowjackets are right behind them at 7-3.

Today (3/9): four games, one campus
Saint Martin’s hosts Montana State-Billings in both softball and baseball this afternoon. Both doubleheaders start at 1:00 PM.
The 4-13 Saints baseball team opens up conference play against the 3-5 Yellowjackets who were picked to finish third in the preseason GNAC coaches poll. Saint Martin’s was picked to finish fourth. Billings features 25 new players to their roster but do return 2011 GNAC newcomer of the year shortstop Colby Robison. Robison hit .335 and drove in 34 runs last season but is off to a slow start in 2012 hitting just .214. Ty Gilmore leads the Yellowjackets this season with a .417 batting average.
Across campus, it’s a battle for first place when the Saints softball team also plays two against the Yellowjackets. The Saints come into the game at 6-1 in the GNAC while Billings is 6-2. The Yellowjackets have scored 90 runs and hit 17 home runs in their first 13 games and are led by Meg Harasymczuk’s five homers and .356 batting average. Rose Harrington leads the team with a .444 batting average.

Down 8-7 to UPS with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning, Saint Martin’s Travis Shaw collided with the Logger first baseman knocking the throw from the shortstop loose and allowing two runs to score to give the Saints a 9-8 comeback victory. Shaw and Adam Hudspeth each went 2-for-4 in the game and Zach Leonard drew three walks and had one hit out of the leadoff spot. Seven Saints pitchers combined to give up 10 walks on the afternoon. The Saints push their record to 4-13 overall and will open conference play with a four game weekend series against Montana State-Billings. Game one of the series is on Friday at 1:00 PM at Saint Martin’s.
College softball
Saint Martin’s didn’t play today, but they did take a loss off of their record. The Saints protested their 7-3 loss to Central Washington last Sunday after a home run by the Wildcats was first ruled foul and then ruled fair after deliberation by the umpires. The NCAA ruled in favor of the Saints and the game will have to be replayed from the point of the disputed home run, which happened in the first inning. Removing that loss means the Saints are now 8-4 overall and 6-1 in the GNAC. Read more from SMUSaints.com
Today (3/6): Saints vs. Loggers
It looks like it’s going to be a cold but sunny day for some baseball at Saint Martin’s when the Saints take on the UPS Loggers at 2:00 PM.
Saint Martin’s comes into the game at just 3-13 but have won three of their last five games and stayed with Division I Seattle University on Saturday in a 6-3 loss to the Redhawks. The Saints are led offensively by senior center fielder Zach Leonard’s (pictured left, photo credit SMUSaints.com) .300 batting average and two home runs and senior shortstop Josh Grenier, who is batting .259 but is tied with Leonard for the team lead with 15 hits and seven runs scored.
UPS also has just three wins on the season and are 3-9-1 this season. The Loggers are led by senior third baseman Will Mentor’s .346 batting average and six RBI.
The game is scheduled to be played at SMU field on the Saint Martin’s campus but will be loved to the RAC if poor weather moves in.
Men’s college basketball review
I’m back from Hawaii and I only missed the end of the high school basketball season and the college basketball season during my vacation, that’s all. Now that we have a bit of a lull until spring sports start next week, let’s take a quick look back at the college basketball season here in Olympia. We’ll start today with the men.
The Evergreen State College
Record: 1-26 overall, 0-18 Cascade Collegiate Conference
Best Win: 79-72 – Pacific Lutheran – November 26th
Worst Loss: 64-109 – Eastern Oregon – January 28th
Players graduating (3): Patrick Lewis – 12.3 ppg (2nd on team) and 7.6 rpg (1st), Larry Green – 11.4 ppg (3rd), Marcus Buren – 2.2 ppg
Key returners: Mike Derosier – 9.4 ppg (4th), Elzie Dickens – 8.8 ppg (5th) and 6.7 rpg (3rd), Travis Wagner – 8.0 ppg (7th)
Two years after going to the second round of the NAIA Division II tournament, Evergreen became one of ten teams in the NCAA and NAIA to win one game or less this season. The loss of the team’s leading scorer, Marice Tolliver, at the end of December coupled with the loss of Tyrell Stephens at the same time and Julian Holliday early that month and Mikey Hope in pre-season left the Geoducks drastically shorthanded. They played with only seven players for much of the conference season and dressed only six for a couple of games and those numbers were only because they added 5’3″, 115 pound freshman Les Jones in the middle of the season. Arvin Mosley Jr. has a tough task ahead of him this off-season with only Derosier, Dickens, Wagner and Jones returning.
Saint Martin’s University
Record: 10-17 overall, 6-12 Great Northwest Athletic Conference
Best win: 74-65 – Western Oregon – January 14th – WOU was 1st in conference at the time
Worst loss: 70-72 – Alaska-Fairbanks – February 18th – UAF won only two games in the GNAC

An eight game losing streak in the second half of the conference season did the Saints in this season. While losses to the Seattle Pacifics and Alaska-Anchorages of the GNAC are understandable, it was the losses to Alaska-Fairbanks and Simon Fraser that made absolutely no sense and kept the Saints out of the GNAC playoffs that they hosted. The Saints started the same five players all season long including the three seniors – Green, Pendleton and Votaw. With those three graduating, the Saints will have to replace 40.6 of the 69.1 points per game that they scored this season. Senior leadership from O’Neill and Bomber will help, but they need Taylor to come back from injury and Alex Williams to finally get healthy and hope somebody steps up from the group of nondescript backups to take the reins.
South Puget Sound Community College
Record: 12-16 overall, 8-8 NWAACC West
Best win: 69-66 – Pierce College – February 13th – Start of a 4-1 finish to the regular season and gave them the tiebreaker over Pierce for place in the playoffs.
Worst loss: 78-110 – Tacoma CC – February 15th
Graduating players (3): Lucky Lagerberg – 9.25 ppg (5th on team) and 5.43 rpg (2nd), Tyler Vandenhoff – 3.54 ppg, Caleb Pace (injured)
Key returners: Anye Turner – 15.32 ppg (1st), 11.93 rpg (1st), 2.21 blocks per game (1st) and 2.07 steals per game (1st), Scotty Ewing – 13.71 ppg (2nd) and 2.32 apg (1st), Deshawn Hayes – 12.33 ppg (3rd), Jamey Smith – 9.57 ppg (4th)
Black Hills High School’s Anye Turner blew up this season leading SPSCC to the NWAACC playoffs after winning only four games last year, and he’s only a freshman. In fact, the Clippers top four scorers are all freshman and will be expected to build on a season that progressively got better culminating in a 4-1 end to the regular season that got them to Kennewick.
