Saturday scoreboard: Cougars advance to semis, Rams fall; O’Neill’s career night leads Saints

Capital 46, Burlington-Edison 19
University 23, North Thurston 7
Kai Van Sickle scored another five touchdowns today and Capital easily moved into the semifinals next week at the Tacoma Dome with a 46-19 win over Burlington-Edison at Ingersoll Stadium.
After jumping out to a 15-3 lead in the first quarter, the Cougars surrendered a touchdown and a field goal and the Tigers trailed by just two points, 15-13. But Capital ran off 31 unanswered points from that point before Burlington-Edison scored in garbage time.
Capital will face Lynden in the semifinals at the Tacoma Dome next Saturday.
The road finally caught up to North Thurston today with a 23-13 quarterfinals loss to University in Spokane.
The Rams fell behind 21-0 before a Mo Manning seven yard run got them on the board in the third quarter. Brandon Belisario scored a three yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter to cut the Titans’ lead to ten but it was too little, too late and North Thurston’s season ends at 9-3.

Saint Martin’s 61, Notre Dame de Namur 45 – Recap from SMUSaints.com
Roger O’Neill scored a career high 24 points and Rei Jensen chipped in 10 points to lead Saint Martin’s to a 61-45 win over Notre Dame de Namur in Monmouth, Oregon at the WOU Phoenix Inn Shootout. The Saints held the Argos to just 28.6% shooting in the game and no Argo scored in double digits.
Women’s basketball
UPS 72, Evergreen 65 – Recap from Evergreen athletics
Danielle Swain scored 20 points and pulled down 12 rebounds and Evergreen held a 61-60 lead with 4:02 left to play in the game. But UPS outscored the Geoducks 12-5 down the stretch to take home a 72-65 win at Memorial Fieldhouse in Tacoma.

Today (11/17): Cougars host Tigers in quarterfinals; Senior night for Saints
The state quarterfinals continue tonight with two local teams on each side of the state. The first and closest game takes place at Ingersoll Stadium where Capital plays host to Burlington-Edison at 4:00 PM.
Both teams run the ball very well, especially Capital’s Kai Van Sickle who rushed for 350 yards and six touchdowns in last week’s 45-27 win over Lakewood. But not to be outdone, the Tigers rushed for 395 yards as a team including Tyler Morrison’s 211 yards in a 35-21 win over Orting. Burlington-Edison lost three games this season falling to Ferndale (lost to Bellevue last week), Sehome (4-6 on the season) and Lynden (still alive), all on their home field. Capital is 9-2 on the season with losses to two teams still alive in the playoffs, Bellarmine and Tumwater.
ScoreCzar is predicting that Capital will win the contest 30-11. The game can be heard online on Mount Vernon’s KAPS website or 660 AM if you are in Skagit County.
Across the state, the North Thurston Rams travel are forced to travel east again to take on University Prep in Spokane at 5:00 PM. The Rams are 9-2 on the season and are coming off a 35-23 win over Kennewick in Kennewick last Saturday. They take on the 7-4 Titans who started the season at just 2-4 but have won five straight including a surprising 34-6 victory over O’Dea last week.
ScoreCzar expects North Thurston to win 26-11. I have not found a broadcast for the game yet but you can follow The Olympian’s Meg Wochnick on Twitter for updates.
Finally, the Saint Martin’s volleyball team plays their final match of the season when they take on Western Oregon at Marcus Pavilion. The Saints (3-14 GNAC, 6-17 overall) will honor two seniors, Teilissa Tua and Katy Ferguson, playing their last match in a Saint Martin’s uniform.
Game time is scheduled for 7:00 PM.

Tumwater 21, Archbishop Murphy 0
Behind two Jayden Croft to Andrew Brown touchdowns, Tumwater moved won their 11th straight game and moved into the 2A state semifinals with a 21-0 win over Archbishop Murphy at Tumwater Stadium.
The T-Birds struck first when Croft hooked up with Brown on a 36 yard touchdown pass on the second play of the second quarter. The two hooked up again on a 25 yard touchdown pass later in the second quarter to take a 14-0 lead into halftime.
After a scoreless third quarter, the T-Bitds picked up a Wildcats fumble and Korye Treko took it back 15 yards and salted the game away sending the T-Birds into the final four to face the winner of tomorrow’s Prosser/Othello game next week at the Tacoma Dome.

Emporia State 64, Saint Martin’s 56 – Recap from ESUHornets.com
Emporia State held Saint Martin’s to just 18.8% shooting in the second half and 31.1% for the game and knocked off the Saints 64-56 on the first day of the WOU Phoenix Inn Shootout in Monmouth, Oregon. Evan Coulter led the Saints with 15 points and Roger O’Neill chipped in ten in the loss.
The Saints and the Hornets shot an identical 13-of-29 (44.8%) in the first half and Saint Martin’s took a 31-30 lead into the locker room. But Emporia State shot 40% in the second half including five three pointers while the Saints made just six field goals total. Despite the poor shooting, the Saints were within three points with 3:38 left to play before they were outscored by the Hornets 9-4 the rest of the way.
Emporia State’s Kaleb Wright led all scorers with 17 points and the Hornets moved to 3-0 on the season. The Saints fall to 1-2 and will take on Notre Dame de Namur tomorrow at 5:15 PM in Monmouth.

Saint Martin’s 66, Evergreen 50 – Recaps from SMU and Evergreen
Saint Martin’s shot just 26.2% in the first half but were outdone by Evergreen’s 17.4% shooting and the Saints led 24-16 after one half of basketball. But the Saints outscored the Geoducks 26-11 over the first eleven minutes of the second half and cruised to a 66-50 win at the CRC Gymnasium. Saint Martin’s took advantage of 22 offensive rebounds and 25 Evergreen turnovers to pick up their third straight win in the crosstown series.
Evan Coulter led the Saints with 13 points and eight rebounds while Rei Jensen and Lucas Shannon each chipped in 11 points. Marc Taylor scored 11 points for the Geoducks and collected 12 boards and Elzie Dickens III chipped in 10 points.
Despite the win, the Saints still trail the Geoducks 9-8 in the all-time series between the two schools.

Saint Martin’s 47, Evergreen 37 – Recaps from SMU and Evergreen
Brooke Paulson scored twelve points to lead Saint Martin’s to a 47-37 win over Evergreen at the CRC Gymansium on Tuesday night. The win moves the Saints to 16-1 all-time against the Geoducks.
Evergreen stuck around in a turnover plagued first half and were behind just four points, 20-16, heading into the locker room. But the Saints quickly built a double-digit lead in the second half that eventually stretched to as many as 15 and Evergreen never threatened again.
Danielle Swain led the Geoducks with 13 points and seven rebounds.

Mead 3, Olympia 0 (25-22, 25-17, 36-34)
Jackson 3, Olympia 1 (28-26, 25-21, 20-25, 25-22)
Olympia lost in straight sets to Mead in the semifinals including an epic 36-34 loss in the third set and then lost 3-1 in the 3rd/4th place game to finish fourth in state.
3A state tournament semifinals
North Thurston 3, Southridge 0 (25-15, 30-28, 25-20)
Prairie 3, North Thurston 0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-16)
North Thurston knocked off Southridge in straight sets but were swept by Prairie in the title game and finished second at state.
2A state tournament
Tumwater 3, Colville 2 (25-17, 17-25, 25-23, 23-25, 15- 10)
West Valley (Yakima) 3, Tumwater 1 (25-24, 18-25, 25-22, 25-18)
Tumwater knocked off Colville to advance to the 2A state title game but fell to West Valley of Yakima, 3-1, and finished second at state.
2A state tournament consolation
Capital 3, Sehome 1 (26-24, 25-20, 23-25, 25-19)
East Valley (Yakima) 3, Capital 0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-21)
Capital knocked Sehome out of the tournament but was swept by East Valley to take eighth in state.

North Thurston 35, Kennewick 23
Marysville-Pilchuck 33, Timberline 21
Kennewick took a 16-0 lead to open the game but then gave up 28 straight points over the remainder of the first half and North Thurston moved on to the quarterfinals with a 35-23 win this afternoon in Kennewick. Mo Manning scored twice for the Rams and Brandon Belisario added another touchdown on the ground. Ryan Mets hooked up with Josh Cahill for a 26 yard touchdown that proved to be the game-winner. The Rams will have to head east again to take on University in Spokane next week.
Marysville-Pilchuck limited Timberline’s high powered offense to just two touchdowns and ended the Blazers’ season with a 33-21 win at South Sound Stadium. Chris MacNeil threw two touchdown passes in his final game as at Timberline.
2A state tournament
Capital 47, Lakewood 36
Kai Van Sickle scored six rushing touchdowns including two in the fourth quarter and Capital came from behind to beat Lakewood 47-36 at Goddard Stadium in Everett. The Cougars trailed 22-21 in the third quarter before Derek Chase’s 95 yard kickoff return put the Cougars on top 27-22. But Lakewood responded and led 36-33 in the fourth quarter but Van Sickle’s 32 yard run put Capital ahead for good, 40-36. Unofficially, Van Sickle rushed 51 times for 350 yards.
Next up for Capital: Burlington-Edison, who were 35-21 winners over Orting on Friday.

Cascade Collegiate Conference championships
Concordia 2, Evergreen 1 – Recap from Evergreen athletics
Concordia’s Septi Danciu beat Evergreen goalkeeper Mauricio Sanchez on a penalty kick in the 49th minute for what proved to be the game winning goal and the Cavaliers captured the Cascade Collegiate Conference title with a 2-1 win at Tuominen Yard in Portland. Ben Joselyn scored in the 88th minute to get the Geoducks back in the game but there wasn’t enough time left to score an equalizer and Evergreen’s season came to an end. The Geoducks finish the season at 13-5 overall.

Today (11/6): Geoducks host first playoff game in program history
The Evergreen men’s soccer team hosts Warner Pacific in their very first home playoff game in program history today, though their “home” field will be the RAC in Lacey for this game. The Geoducks went 12-2 in Cascade Collegiate League play and are the #2 seed in the playoffs. The Knights finished third in conference at 8-5-1.
Evergreen swept the season series between the two teams. Willie Spurr scored a goal and Warner Pacific surrendered a game winning own goal in the Geoducks 2-1 win on September 22nd in Portland. Then on October 24th, Kevin Flavin scored a pair of goals and Mauricio Sanchez posted his fourth shutout of the season to take home a 2-0 win and clinch this home playoff game.
First kick today at the RAC is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
