Thursday scoreboard: Reign rock Tornadoes; Brewers, Cardinals win league openers

Olympia Reign 132, Nippon Tornadoes 109 – Box score
Nate Menefee hit seven three pointers and scored 28 points, dished out eight assists and pulled down seven rebounds to lead the Olympia Reign to their fourth win of the season by beating the Nippon Tornadoes 132-109. Marcus Whitaker and Mike Ward scored 21 and 20 points respectively for the Reign and Giovanne Woods added another 13 points, 12 assists and seven boards. Brandon Adams, in his second game with the Reign, scored 16 points and had a team high 11 rebounds.
The Nippon Tornadoes were without the services of Jordan Mast and his 29.4 points and 13.2 points per game so Joe Wolfinger made up the difference by scoring 41 points and grabbing a ridiculous 35 rebounds, 26 of which were offensive.
Puget Sound Collegiate League baseball
Lacey Saints 6, Tumwater Brewers 1
Hawks Prairie Cardinals 7, Olympia Athletics 6
The Tumwater Brewers’ Devin Smith (Olympic College) and the Lacey Saints’ Colin Nilson (PLU) each gave up just one earned run over five and six innings respectively but Smith was the victim of an error and gave up an unearned run in the third inning and suffered the loss for the Brewers in their 6-1 loss to the Saints. Kyle Pegram’s (Pierce College) single to center in the fourth inning drove in Mark Klick (Green River CC) for the eventual game winning run and Devin Ferguson (Centralia College, North Thurston) continued his hot start driving in three runs on a bases clearing double in the 7th inning. Ferguson now has eight RBI in five games this season for the Saints. Kyle Holtman and Takashi Yamada (Olympic College) each went 2-for-4 for the Brewers.
Also today (6/14): Reign welcome Tornadoes to Little Creek
The Olympia Reign return to the Skookum Creek Events Center at Little Creek Casino tonight when they take on the Nippon Tornadoes.
The Reign picked up just their third win of the season in a 136-129 overtime win over the Tornadoes two weeks ago. The Tornadoes are 0-6 this season and other than the seven point loss to the Reign, they have been outscored by other IBL squads by an average of 45 points per game. The Tornadoes are led by Jordan Mast, a Gonzaga walk-on that played just 12 games for the Zags. Mast is averaging 29.4 points per game and 13.2 rebounds per game and would be leading the league in scoring and second in rebounds but he has played one game less than the minimum to qualify for the leaderboard. Former University of Washington reserve seven footer Joe Wolfinger is fifth in the IBL in scoring with 21.2 points per game. Mast scored 39 points and pulled down 18 boards and Wolfinger also scored 39 points and had 21 rebounds in the first meeting between the two teams.
Tip-off tonight at Little Creek is at 7:00 PM. Tickets are just $7 or are $5 with a players club card.
Friday scoreboard: Reign comeback comes up short in Bellingham

Bellingham Slam 130, Olympia Reign 126
Down 101-84 after three quarters, the Olympia Reign scored 42 points in the fourth quarter and cut the Bellingham Slam lead to just one point with 10.7 seconds left. After the Slam’s Mo Anderson made one of two free throws to make it a two point game, the Reign turned the ball over and never got a chance to tie or take the lead and lost 130-126. The Slam led by 21 points with 4:09 left in the third quarter when the Reign’s Nicholas Moore was given two technicals fouls and sent to the locker room. Individual stats from the game will be added when available.
Saturday scoreboard: Sounders U23s delight; A’s, Cardinals, Brewers win; Reign hate Canada
Premier Development League soccer
Sounders U23 1, Portland Timbers U23 0
It took over 90 minutes, but the Sounders U23s broke through in added time with a Jamael Cox blast that scorched the Timbers’ Spencer Richey and sent the Tumwater Stadium crowd of primarily Sounders fans home very happy. Facundo Dipasquale, a 75th minute substitution for starter Sean Okoli, made the pass to the streaking Cox to setup the goal. Sounders keeper Doug Herrick had eight saves including two fantastic saves in a row midway through the second half on shots that looked like for sure goals for the Timbers.

Friday scoreboard: Shorthanded Reign struggle in Canada

Edmonton Energy 126, Olympia Reign 69 – box score
Without three of their top five scorers, the Olympia Reign struggled to put up points on Friday night in Edmonton scoring a season low 69 in a 57 point loss to the Edmonton Energy. Nicholas Moore (17.4 ppg), Marcus Whittaker (13.8 ppg) and Nate Menafee (13.0 ppg) didn’t make the road trip and the Reign had to rely on their top two scorers to provide the offense. Giovanne Woods scored 18 points on 8-f0r-14 shooting but Mike Ward struggled and only scored eight. Only two other players were in double digit scoring for the Reign. Ike Ohanson totaled 11 points and Jacob Manning added 10.
On the other hand, the Edmonton Energy had seven players score in double digits including 22 points from Robbie Sihota and 21 from Troy Gottselig. The Energy out-rebounded the Reign 63-28 (and the Reign had just four offensive boards) and had 37 assists compared to just 14 for the Reign.
With the loss the Reign dropped to 3-9 while the Energy moved to 7-3. The two teams meet again tomorrow in Edmonton.

Olympia Reign 136, Nippon Tornadoes 129
Nicholas Moore scored 24 points and Marcus Whitaker and Giovonne Woods added 21 points for the Olympia Reign in their 136-129 overtime win over the Nippon Tornadoes. Woods also pulled down a team high 14 rebounds and had seven assists.
Nippon was led by Jordan Mast and Joe Wolfinger who each scored 39 points. Mast added 18 rebounds and nine assists while Wolfinger had 21 rebounds and shot a perfect 3-for-3 from the three point line. Not bad for a one year walk on at Gonzaga and a rarely used reserve at Washington.
The win moves the Reign to 3-7 on the season while the Tornadoes fall to 0-3. Olympia now hits the road for a game in Edmonton tomorrow night but will play the Tornadoes again at Little Creek on June 14th.
Tonight (5/31): Reign host Tornadoes
The Olympia Reign welcome the Nippon Tornadoes to the Skookum Creek Events Center at Little Creek Casino tonight. Former Seattle Supersonics star Gary Payton will also pay a visit to Little Creek and the Reign are spreading the rumor that Shawn Kemp will also be on hand.
The Nippon Tornadoes are 0-2 this season and have been outscored by an average of 44 points in their two games against the Vancouver Volcanoes and Bellingham Slam. The Slam beat the Tornadoes by 54 points on Monday. According to the box score from the game, the Tornadoes played just five six players and one of them only played four minutes. Jordan Mast, a guard that played 12 games as a walk on at Gonzaga in 2006-2007, scored 38 points while Yashuo Iijima scored 33. Mast scored 48 points in their opener against Vancouver and pulled down 13 rebounds. Former University of Washington reserve center Joe Wolfinger scored 28 points in that game but didn’t play in their game in Bellingham.
Tip-0ff tonight at Little Creek is at 7:00 PM. Tickets are just $7 for adults and $5 for player club members.

Thursday scoreboard: Chinooks thrash Reign

Portland Chinooks 136, Olympia Reign 101
Everett Spencer scored 32 points and pulled down 14 boards and David Lucas chipped in 30 points as the Portland Chinooks easily knocked off the Olympia Reign, 136-101.
The Reign took a 33-30 lead after one quarter but were taken to the woodshed in the second getting outscored 37-17 as the Chinooks took a 67-50 lead at halftime. Despite the lead, the Chinooks didn’t take their foot off the pedal in the second half scoring 69 points by shooting 22-for-35 (63%) from the field and hitting seven three pointers.
The Reign were led by Nick Moore’s 25 points and Mike Ward’s 21. The Reign drop to 2-7 on the season and it doesn’t get any easier. Tomorrow they head to Bellingham for a showdown with the first place Slam.
