Today (3/23): Baseball, softball, soccer and fights

It looks like it will be a decent, sunny, somewhat chilly day in Olympia and it’s a good thing because there is a ton of baseball and softball to be played today. Not to mention a couple soccer games and the fights in Tumwater, not that they need beautiful weather.

Baseball kicks things off when Capital takes on Tumwater at Tumwater High School starting at 11:00 AM in a game originally scheduled for Wednesday afternoon. Across I-5, Black Hills hosts Shelton in a non-league game with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 PM.

Saints_logoThe Saint Martin’s baseball team looks to snap a seven game losing streak against second place Western Oregon in a doubleheader beginning at 4:00 PM at The RAC. The Saints are just 3-19 overall and 1-7 in the GNAC while Western Oregon was picked to win the GNAC but sit in second place at 6-2 in conference. Timberline grad Taylor Hetrick is in his first season with the Wolves after transferring from New Mexico State. The sophomore has made three appearances and has a 2.45 ERA.

At noon the Saint Martin’s softball team takes on Western Washington in doubleheader action. The Saints currently sit in third place in the GNAC at 5-3 in conference and 14-8 overall and the Vikings are one game behind them at 4-4 in conference. The Saints’ Sam Munger is the reigning GNAC player of the week, the second time she was honored this season, and is 7-4 with a 2.16 ERA so far this season. Lacey McGladrey is riding a 14-game hitting streak, the second longest streak in school history.

NWFC XVIThe days slate of boys soccer games kicks off at 1:00 PM with a non-league game between Capital and Seattle Academy at Ingersoll Stadium. Then at 2:00, Tumwater Stadium hosts a non-league doubleheader beginning with Tumwater and Shelton and continuing at 5:00 when Black Hills takes on Timberline. This game is actually scheduled for noon.

And finally, Northwest Fight Challenge XVI takes over South Sound Sports Center in Tumwater. The night is presented by the Academy of Brian Johnson in Lacey and features local MMA fighters. Doors open at 6:00 PM with fights getting underway at 7:00 PM. Tickets are available at the door for $25. Oly Sports will be at the fights and will have a photo gallery tomorrow night and you can follow along with the action on Twitter at @OlySportsBlog.
