Down 3-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning in an elimination game at the GNAC Championships in Richland, Saint Martin’s hit three home runs including back-to-back home runs by freshmen Mary Dettling and Jackie Schmaeling to extend their season with a 4-3 win over Western Washington.
A pair of Saints errors allowed the Vikings took a 3-0 lead in the top of the sixth inning capped off by a two run homer by Jordan Walley. The Saints got Lacey McGladrey and Megan Miller on base in the the bottom half of the sixth but were unable to answer. Sam Munger then made quick work of Western in the top of the seventh.
With three outs between the Saints and elimination, Taviah Jenkins singled to open the inning and scored on Dani Wall’s two run blast to right center to cut the score to Vikings lead to 3-2.
After a Western pitching change, Christina Demar struck out for the first out of the inning. Dettling took Shayna Adelstein deep in the next at bat to tie the game, 3-3, and Schmaeling jumped on a 1-0 pitch and deposited it over the left center wall for the game winner.
The rally eliminated the #2 seed Western Washington and sent the Saints to another elimination game immediately afterward with #3 Central Wasington.

The Wildcats scored in each of the four innings that they batted including a four spot in the third and three more in the fourth that put the game out of reach and GNAC Pitcher of the Year Maria Gau allowed just five hits over five shutout innings.
The Saints finished their season at 27-22, their third straight 20+ win season and should be strong again next year with just one senior, Lacey McGladrey, on the roster.
