Saint Martin’s 6, Simon Fraser 1 – Recap on

Saint Martin’s had two chances to win one game to claim the GNAC tournament championship on Saturday afternoon in Billings, Montana. Simon Fraser forced a final game with a 3-2 win in game one but Taylor Bakos shut down The Clan offense in game two and the Saints claimed their first GNAC title and an automatic berth to the NCAA tournament.

Simon Fraser scored right off the bat in game one with Trisha Bourchard’s two run homer in the first inning. They then added a run in the third inning when Bourchard stole home. Kelsey Hawkins went 5 1/3 innings giving up just four hits and one earned run for The Clan. The Saints did get one run in the bottom of the seventh inning but were unable to get the tying run home from third and Simon Fraser escaped with a 3-2 win.

Game two was a completely different story. Joslyn Eugenio homered in the second inning and Lacey McGladrey and Sam Munger each drove in a run in the Saints’ three run third inning and the Saints would put two more on the board in the fifth. Simon Fraser advanced runners past second base just twice in the game, one would score in the fifth but another was stranded at third when The Clan hit into an inning ending double play. Munger went 3-for-4 for the Saints extending her hitting streak to 22 games and took home the Tournament MVP.

The 22nd ranked Saints advance to the NCAA Division II Regionals. They will find out where they will go on Monday morning.
