Today (11/23): Cougars, Lions at the Dome

The 2A state football semifinals get started today at the Tacoma Dome when Kai Van Sickle and his Capital Cougars take on the Lynden Lions. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 PM and the game will be broadcast live on ROOT Sports.

Capital comes into the game at 10-2 with their only losses coming to two teams still alive in the state playoffs: Tumwater and Bellarmine. The Cougars knocked off Ridgefield 42-6 in the crossover game, Lakewood 47-36 in the first round and easily handled Burlington-Edison last week, 46-19, to get to the Dome. Van Sickle has been unbelievable in the playoffs rushing for 754 yards and 12 touchdowns in his three games and now has 2,599 yards and 38 TDs this season, only 83 yards from the single season rushing record.

But Capital runs into the #2 ranked Lions who stand at 11-1 on the season and have won 11 straight games. Their only loss of the season came in their opener against King’s, 42-39. During their winning streak, the Lions have outscored their opponents 486-116 and only 41 of their opponents points came during the first three quarters. The other 75 points came during the fourth quarter when the game was long out of reach. The six time state champions have a balanced attack led by QB Josh Kraght, who has over 1,800 yards passing and 21 TDs, and RB Luke Christianson, a 1,200 yard rusher with 20 TDs.

ScoreCzar predicts that Lynden will come out on top, 30-24. The winner of the game moves into the finals next week and will take on the winner of the Tumwater/Prosser game scheduled for tomorrow in Kennewick.

  1. Give me a Capital/Tumwater final. Nothing better than an old rivalry game for the championship.
