Tonight (2/23): hard luck Saints host Central

23 Feb

Tonight, the hard luck Saint Martin’s men’s basketball team welcomes Central Washington to Marcus Pavilion in the first of two weekend games that will wrap up the GNAC regular season.

The two teams haven’t played each other since December 3rd when Central knocked off the Saints 72-61 in Ellensburg. In that game the Wildcat’s Lacy Haddock scored 26 points and Toussaint Tyler added another 20.  The Saints were led by Jeremy Green’s 19 points and Roger O’Neill’s 17.

Haddock is currently seventh in the GNAC scoring 15.8 points points per game and two Wildcats are in the top four in rebounding, Jody Johnson averages eight boards a game and Kevin Davis averages 7.7.    The Wildcats are 7-9 in the GNAC but are coming off an 89-82 upset of first place and #10 ranked Western Washington on Saturday.

Tip-off for tonight’s game at Saint Martin’s is set for 7:00 PM.

The women will honor their lone senior, Mele Rich, and will then try take care of business on their end in their quest to make the CCC playoffs. The Geoduck men will honor three seniors – Marcus Buren, Larry Green and Patrick Lewis – and then take on the #10 ranked Eagles. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 PM.

It’s also senior night for the Saint Martin’s women when they host Alaska-Fairbanks at Marcus Pavilion. The Saints will honor five seniors – Megan Teade, Emily Lashua, Marelle Moehrle, Andrea Schutt and Kelsey Baker. They then take on the Nanooks, who are in last place in the GNAC at just 2-14, half a game worse than the Saints. Tip-off is at 7:00 PM.

In college softball action, Saint Martin’s is scheduled to play a doubleheader against Western Oregon at noon, but weather will probably force it’s postponement.

Thursday scoreboard: Saints get blasted, Carras ends career in style

16 Feb

Women’s basketball

Alaska-Anchorage 74, Saint Martin’s 42 – More from SMUSaints.com

One player can only do so much. Saint Martin’s Chelsea Haskey had 20 points but no other Saint had more than four points and #11 Alaska-Anchorage easily won to clinch a share of the GNAC title. The Saints were only down by one point halfway through the second half but a 21-5 run by the Seawolves sealed their fate and dropped the Saints to 2-13 in conference this season. The Saints did hold Haley Holmstead to just four points but Hanna Johansson led the Seawolves with 17 points and Kaylie Robison chipped in 14.

Men’s basketball

Alaska-Anchorage 81, Saint Martin’s 59 – More from GoSeawolves.com

Saint Martin’s led at the half, 39-38, but were outscored by 23 points in the second half and moved to 1-16 all-time against the Seawolves in Anchorage. Jeremy Green and Ryan Votaw each scored 13 points for the Saints and Alaska-Anchorage was led by Travis Thompson’s 21 points and Taylor Rohde’s 17. The Saints drop to 4-13 in the GNAC. By the way, Alaska-Anchorage has a player named Boomer Blossom. Easily my favorite name I’ve seen this season.

Boy’s basketball

Raymond 62, Northwest Christian 58

Northwest Christian’s
season comes to an end with the loss to Raymond, but Zach Carras gave a masterful performance to finish his career scoring 39 points. But again, only one player can do so much. No other Navigator scored more than five points on the night. Raymond was led by sophomore Darol Ratsavongsy’s (also another great name) 27 points.

Tonight (2/16): Lady Saints face Anchorage

16 Feb

The Saint Martin’s women will get a stiff test tonight when #11 ranked Alaska-Anchorage comes to town.

The Seawolves are in first place in the GNAC with a 13-2 conference record and are 22-4 overall with two of those losses coming to Division I opponents in the Great Alaskan Shootout. Junior Haley Holmstead is sixth in the GNAC in scoring averaging 15.5 points per game and senior Hanna Johansson is third in rebounding pulling down 9.3 boards per game.

Anchorage won the first meeting in January, 83-48. Holmstead had 23 points for the Seawolves and freshman Jordyn Richardson came off the bench to score 18 points for the Saints.

Tip-off is at 7:00 PM at Marcus Pavilion.

Yet another double-double for Poole

12 Feb

Former Saint Martin’s Saint Blake Poole keeps on rolling in Germany.  Poole had 15 points and 12 rebounds for BG Dorsten in their 86-65 win over Alba Berlin on Saturday. It was his 18th double-double of the season and he has led Dorsten in rebounding in every one of their 21 games this season.  Here’s more on Poole’s performance from the Dorsten website, as translated by Bing…

“Now, had the nose but Blake Poole fully and took the booklet in hand. So far still not quite as much succeeded him, but now he used his stature to just highlight the conditions. He brought many rebounds and contributed even one or other points of the 45: 36-break guide at.”

Got it?  He took the booklet in hand, of course.

But seriously, the win clinched a spot in the playoffs for Poole and BG Dorsten. Congrats!
