Saturday scoreboard: T-Birds, Rams, Geoducks take second on an epic day of Oly sports

High school volleyball

4A state tournament
Mead 3, Olympia 0 (25-22, 25-17, 36-34)
Jackson 3, Olympia 1 (28-26, 25-21, 20-25, 25-22)

Olympia lost in straight sets to Mead in the semifinals including an epic 36-34 loss in the third set and then lost 3-1 in the 3rd/4th place game to finish fourth in state.

3A state tournament semifinals
North Thurston 3, Southridge 0 (25-15, 30-28, 25-20)
Prairie 3, North Thurston 0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-16)

North Thurston knocked off Southridge in straight sets but were swept by Prairie in the title game and finished second at state.

2A state tournament
Tumwater 3, Colville 2 (25-17, 17-25, 25-23, 23-25, 15- 10)
West Valley (Yakima) 3, Tumwater 1 (25-24, 18-25, 25-22, 25-18)

Tumwater knocked off Colville to advance to the 2A state title game but fell to West Valley of Yakima, 3-1, and finished second at state.

2A state tournament consolation
Capital 3, Sehome 1 (26-24, 25-20, 23-25, 25-19)
East Valley (Yakima) 3, Capital 0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-21)

Capital knocked Sehome out of the tournament but was swept by East Valley to take eighth in state.


High school football

3A state tournament
North Thurston 35, Kennewick 23
Marysville-Pilchuck 33, Timberline 21

Kennewick took a 16-0 lead to open the game but then gave up 28 straight points over the remainder of the first half and North Thurston moved on to the quarterfinals with a 35-23 win this afternoon in Kennewick. Mo Manning scored twice for the Rams and Brandon Belisario added another touchdown on the ground. Ryan Mets hooked up with Josh Cahill for a 26 yard touchdown that proved to be the game-winner. The Rams will have to head east again to take on University in Spokane next week.

Marysville-Pilchuck limited Timberline’s high powered offense to just two touchdowns and ended the Blazers’ season with a 33-21 win at South Sound Stadium. Chris MacNeil threw two touchdown passes in his final game as at Timberline.

2A state tournament
Capital 47, Lakewood 36

Kai Van Sickle scored six rushing touchdowns including two in the fourth quarter and Capital came from behind to beat Lakewood 47-36 at Goddard Stadium in Everett. The Cougars trailed 22-21 in the third quarter before Derek Chase’s 95 yard kickoff return put the Cougars on top 27-22. But Lakewood responded and led 36-33 in the fourth quarter but Van Sickle’s 32 yard run put Capital ahead for good, 40-36. Unofficially, Van Sickle rushed 51 times for 350 yards.

Next up for Capital: Burlington-Edison, who were 35-21 winners over Orting on Friday.


Men’s soccer

Cascade Collegiate Conference championships
Concordia 2, Evergreen 1 – Recap from Evergreen athletics

Concordia’s Septi Danciu beat Evergreen goalkeeper Mauricio Sanchez on a penalty kick in the 49th minute for what proved to be the game winning goal and the Cavaliers captured the Cascade Collegiate Conference title with a 2-1 win at Tuominen Yard in Portland. Ben Joselyn scored in the 88th minute to get the Geoducks back in the game but there wasn’t enough time left to score an equalizer and Evergreen’s season came to an end. The Geoducks finish the season at 13-5 overall.
