Saturday scoreboard: Senators move to money round in Kelowna

After an epic 17 inning 6-5 loss to the Everett Merchants in the morning/well into the afternoon game at the Canada Day Blast in Kelowna, British Columbia, the Thurston County Senators secured a spot in the money round of the tournament with a 5-1 win over the Nanaimo Coal Miners. They will have to wait until Sunday afternoon to find out what seed they will be. They could be anywhere from the #1 to the #6 seed and will play again Sunday evening.

Friday scoreboard: Smith pitches shutout for Senators in tourney opener

Thurston County Senators 3, North Sound Emeralds 0

Black Hills alum Ryan Smith threw a complete game shutout in a 3-0 Thurston County Senators victory over the North Sound Emeralds in the opening day of pool play at the Canada Day Blast in Kelowna, British Columbia.

Pool play in the tournament continues tomorrow when the Senators take on the Everett Merchants at 9:00 AM and the Nanaimo Coal Miners at 1:30 PM. The winner of the tournament takes home $7,000. The Senators finished second in 2010 and 2011 and took third place last year.

Trailing 5-3 heading into the top of the fifth inning, the Olympia Athletics sent 12 men to the plate scoring seven runs on seven hits including Rudy Leon’s (Spokane Falls) two out, two run double and the A’s cruised to an 11-5 decision over the Lacey Saints. Leon scored one batter later on a single by Ned Jones (Yakima College) and finished the night with two runs scored and three RBIs.

Markus Hinkle (Western Oregon) went 4-for-5 with four RBIs for the A’s while Josh Potter (Campbellsville University) collected three hits with a run and an RBI and Jose Acosta (Centralia College) drove in three runs with a double in first inning for the Saints.

Hawks Prairie Cardinals catcher Lucas Gately (Gonzaga) drove in two runs on a single in the first inning, tripled in a run in the sixth and singled in another run in the seventh in an 11-2 win over the Tumwater Brewers. Brandon Grimsley (Murray State College) and Jeffrey Apigo (Skagit Valley College) each drove in a pair of runs for the Cards and Ethan Kalin (Lower Columbia CC) gave up one earned run on four hits while striking out six batters. Tyler Hiles preserved the win giving up just two hits over the final 3 2/3 innings.

Tanner Marty (Lower Columbia CC) picked up two hits including a double in the first inning for the Brewers. He then scored on a single by Spencer Dodd (Saint Martin’s).

The Lacey Saints will look to build on their first win of the season with another game against the Olympia Athletics tonight at The RAC. The Saints sit at 1-12 this season while the A’s are 5-9. Game two features the 7-5 Tumwater Brewers and the 4-9 Hawks Prairie Cardinals.

The Puget Sound Collegiate League continues on Tuesday evening with games between the winless Lacey Saints (0-12) and the fourth place Olympia Athletics (5-8) in game one and a battle between the two top teams in the league, the West Olympia Linx (10-2) and the Nisqually Silvers (9-3), in the nightcap.

Nick Schultz (Centralia College) scored the game winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the West Olympia Linx a 4-3 win over the Tumwater Brewers. Schultz went 3-for-4, drove in a run and scored twice and Jake Ross (Tacoma CC) collected two hits in the win.

Jeremy Camacho (River Ridge HS) singled in the game tying run and Kano Shota (Olympic College) doubled in the eventual game winner minutes later as the Nisqually Silvers scored five runs in the last two innings to knock off the Olympia Athletics 8-4. Camacho, Shota and Colin McCusker (Pacific University, Timberline HS) each had a pair of hits for the Silvers. Chris Strain (Occidental College) went 3-for-3 for the A’s.

The Hawks Prairie Cardinals broke open a 2-1 game scoring nine runs in the top of the fifth inning in a rain shortened 11-1 win over the Lacey Saints. Jack Freeman (Saint Martin’s) had three hits and scored three times, Jake Ayers (University of Redlands) drove in three runs and Brandon Grimsley (Murray State College) and Cole Nagamine (Hawaii-Hilo) collected two RBIs for the Cards.

Tyler Hiles’ (Grays Harbor College) two run walk-off single capped off a five run comeback to give the Hawks Prairie Cardinals a 5-4 win over the Lacey Saints. The Cardinals strung together four straight singles in the final inning to score three runs to take home the victory. Colin Lang (Hawaii-Hilo) walked and scored in the seventh and singled in a run in the eighth.

Cameron Steffey (Green River CC) gave up just two hits in 6 1/3 scoreless innings and David Tillotson (Centralia College) collected two hits and an RBI for the Saints.

The Olympia Athletics scored 18 runs in just five innings in their 18-4 win over the Nisqually Silvers. Ned Jones (Yakima CC) went 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBIs, Tyler Watkins (Spokane Falls) singled, walked and was hit by a pitch twice and scored all four times he reached base and JJ Nazzaro (Gardner-Webb) went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a pair of runs scored.

Sam Shadle (Pierce College) gave up just two hits and struck out five over 5 2/3 scoreless innings and the West Olympia Linx ran past the Tumwater Brewers 9-0 in the nightcap. Ryan Snider (Oregon Tech) and Keegan Duz-Aguilar (Centralia College) allowed just one base runner over the final 3 1/3 innings to preserve the shutout. Ryan Atkinson (Columbia Basin) collected three hits including a pair of doubles and drove in three runs and Ben Krueger (Oregon Tech) drove in three runs of his own for the Linx.
