And with three losses on Friday night, the boys basketball season comes to an end in Olympia, Lacey and Tumwater. While I’m a little relieved to not have to pay attention while on vacation, I didn’t really want it to end this way.

Oh well, good season and good luck to all the seniors on all of our local basketball teams. Mahalo!

Bad timing, I know, but I’m on vacation until Sunday, February 4th and don’t know how often I’ll be updating the blog. I hope to get to it sometimes, but I’d imagine that I won’t be able to bring you the “Tonight” and “Scoreboard” every night. I will definitely update if big things happen like state titles for our local squads, but I can’t promise anything. Saint Martin’s 99, Central Washington 84 – More from SMUSaints.com

Saint Martin’s offense finally broke out in a big way and led the Saints to a 99-84 victory over Central Washington snapping an eight game losing streak. senior Jeremy Green – playing in his penultimate game – scored 34 points and pulled down 16 rebounds, Roger O’Neill added 22 points, senior Brok Pendelton had 16 and Brady Bomber scored 12. In total, the Saints starters accounted for 90 of the team’s 99 points. The Wildcats were led by Kevin Davis’ 27 points off the bench.

Though the Saints are out of the hunt, they did play spoiler for Central’s bid to make the playoffs. A win tonight and the Wildcats could have clinched the final spot but with the loss they now have to either win at Western Oregon on Saturday or hope that Saint Martin’s knocks off Northwest Nazarene in the final game of the regular season.

Women’s basketball

Saint Martin’s 68, Central Washington 66 – More from WildcatSports.com

River Ridge alum Sophie Russell hit a three pointer with just under a minute to play to tie the game at 66 but Chelsea Haskey’s jumper with 2.1 seconds left on the clock won the game for Saint Martin’s, 68-66. Freshman Brooke Paulson scored 25 points and Haskey had 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Saints. Russell led the Wildcats with 26 points.

The Olympian on the surprise Olympia girls

The Olympian has an interesting profile on the Olympia girls basketball team, a surprise entry into the state tournament at 10-14. It pays to get hot at the end of the season. The Bears were rewarded with a trip to Spokane to face Gonzaga Prep and John Stockton’s daughter in the regionals.

Wallace wins MVP, coaches Landram, Brown and Ham honored

River Ridge’s Brad Wallace was named the 2A EvCo’s boys basketball MVP and his coach, Jeremy Landram, was named co-Coach of the Year along with North Thurston’s Tim Brown. On the girls side, North Thurston’s Mike Ham was named Coach of the Year. The Olympian has the full list of players honored, but here are the local players, broken down by school…

Tonight (2/23): hard luck Saints host Central

Tonight, the hard luck Saint Martin’s men’s basketball team welcomes Central Washington to Marcus Pavilion in the first of two weekend games that will wrap up the GNAC regular season.

The two teams haven’t played each other since December 3rd when Central knocked off the Saints 72-61 in Ellensburg. In that game the Wildcat’s Lacy Haddock scored 26 points and Toussaint Tyler added another 20. The Saints were led by Jeremy Green’s 19 points and Roger O’Neill’s 17.

Haddock is currently seventh in the GNAC scoring 15.8 points points per game and two Wildcats are in the top four in rebounding, Jody Johnson averages eight boards a game and Kevin Davis averages 7.7. The Wildcats are 7-9 in the GNAC but are coming off an 89-82 upset of first place and #10 ranked Western Washington on Saturday.

Tip-off for tonight’s game at Saint Martin’s is set for 7:00 PM.

Wednesday scoreboard: Clippers split at Highline

Men’s basketball

SPSCC 56, Highline 54

Olympia’s Jamey Smith had 17 points and eight rebounds and Black Hill’s Anye Turner had 15 points and 11 rebounds and South Puget Sound held on to beat Highline 56-54 in Des Moines. Deshawn Hayes added 14 points for the Clippers while the Thunderbirds were led by Nikosi Ali’s 18 points and 17 rebounds. SPSCC is finishing the season strong. They were beaten by Highline 80-51 on January 25th and have gone 6-3 since.

Women’s basketball

Highline 63, SPSCC 49

South Puget Sound’s three sophomores combined for 40 of their team’s 49 points and the Clippers fell to Highline 63-49 in Des Moines. Alychia Colon led the way with 14 points while Aisha Jones and Monteaka Norwood each had 13 points for SPSCC in the loss. The Clippers shot only 27% with the three sophomores shot 44 of the team’s 55 shots.
