The college sports season is upon us and the Evergreen men’s soccer team gets things going today with a 1:00 PM game against Trinity Lutheran at Evergreen Pitch. The Geoducks return two solid senior goalkeepers in Mauricio Sanchez and Colin Harlow, the CCC defensive player of the year Brady Espinoza and the CCC newcomer of the year Willie Spurr and are picked to finish second in the Cascade Conference after making an appearance in the conference championship game last season.
At 5:00 PM, head indoors to the CRC Gymnasium for a new era in Evergreen volleyball when the current squad, headed by new head coach Angela Spoja, takes on the Geoducks alumni in a scrimmage.
Tonight is one of South Sound Speedway’s biggest events, the Miller 200. The fastest 3/8ths mile on the West Coast will be at its fastest tonight with over 25 super stock cars lining up for the chance at a $3,000 grand prize. Add to that mini stocks and bumblebees and you got yourself a nice little speedway date. Adult tickets are $22, teens/military/seniors are $20, kids 6-12 are $7 and children 5 and under are free. Racing begins at 6:30 PM.
It’s an extremely busy day of sports in the South Sound highlighted by the Washington State Senior games and the Olympia Traverse. Let’s get right to it…
The Washington State Senior Games draws up to 1,700 participants to the Olympia way and today features the opening ceremonies at Tumwater Stadium at 8:00 AM followed by Track & Field events starting at 9:00 AM and running into the afternoon. Also on the Tumwater High School campus is the 3-on-3 basketball tournament and other basketball events in the gymnasium. Tomorrow also features pickleball, raquetball and bowling at various sites around town. Check the complete schedule here.
The Special Olympics Southwest Region Softball Tournament comes to LBA Park and Stevens Field beginning at 9:00 AM and continuing throughout the day. Volunteers might still be needed so if you would like to help out, head over to LBA bright and early to find out what you can do. Or go root on the handful of Olympia teams that are taking part in the festivities. For more info, click here.
How does a 7.4 mile mountain bike ride, a 22 mile road bike ride, a 3.5 mile paddle, a 4.5 mile run and a final half mile trek to Port Plaza sound to you? Well then the Olympia Traverse is just for you. The festivities get underway at noon at the Mima Falls Trailhead with bikes traveling through the Capitol Forest and The Evergreen State College and to West Bay Park. From there they paddle to Swantown Boatworks, run to Priest Point Park and back and eventually head to Port Plaza with their team to wrap it all up. For more on the Olympia Traverse, head to their website.
The last day of the Puget Sound Collegiate League’s regular season is upon us and a triple header at The RAC finishes it all off. The Olympia Athletics face the West Olympia Linx at 1:00 PM, the Tumwater Brewers face the Nisqually Silvers at 4:00 PM and the Hawks Prairie Cardinals and Lacey Saints wrap it up at 7:00 PM. The PSCL tournament starts on Sunday and runs until Wednesday night.
And if all of that wasn’t enough, the gear heads will love racing in both Rainier and Rochester. Motorcycle and quad racing kicks off at the Rainier Flat Track beginning at 4:30 PM. For more info, click here.
